If the main OCs in this story were voiced, what would they sound like?
9077272
No idea but the zebra's voices would be deeper like Zecora, Sefu would be incredibly low and deep. Verik would be neutral I guess, American neutral, serious, tired, maybe with a touch of Virginian? I leave it up to the readers imagination to come up with what they sound like.
This is an educated man right? There are plenty of materials all around him that could be used for chemical weapons or explosives.
9077549
True, but distilling chemicals in a wagon, on the move? Not wise. Wait until you're at the village. Less chance of unintentional explosions.
Though I'd love to see some Greek Fire.
So, Wete are weed dealers. Nice.
I wonder if there is going to be a time skip, unless this is going to be million of words long, it will take a long will to get him from the bottom to the top.
I'm just going to say this in case you don't know it already. Swords aren't really as good as people make them to be, they are pretty useless against most armors, there are a few exeptions, but even those aren't that useful.
Yes spears are common, but they are for a good reason. Along with the range advantage, they are extremely easy to use and are way better agaist armor. The same can be said for lances and let's not forget the best weapon(In my opinion) the halbert. The reason why most used swords in medieval times was as a back up weapon.
Also one more thing, leather armor is a no-no. First it's extremely expensive to make, second, it's really useless against all weapons. Thick clothing has a lot more protective power then leather armor.
I hope this was useful, I mostly know this because I love the topic. All in all, I really enjoy the story. So keep it up! If I can help with something else, just ask. I'm not an expert, but I would still love to help make the weapons and armor in stories more accurate. I find too many stories that use the made up things that appear in media. (For example the fact that you can cut a wooden shield in half, you can't and if you hit the shield with a sword hard enough to penetrate, you'll get it stuck.) Or things that are common in mlp stories like wing blades, wich are more deadly to the user then anyone else... I may have an obsession now that I think about it...

I hope that is sarcasm because they were talking about clay pots.

Never said it was going to be a fast ride from bottom to top.

Contrary to popular belief almost no one has a clue how to make such things without the aid of a massive industrial base. Odds are also very high you would kill yourself in the attempt of creating such materials with the lack of proper tools and equipment. I am basing this story on reality not self indulgent fantasy where people think they are going to creation the atom bomb while being a caveman. Also there seems to be this enormous belief that "educated" means you can create an A-bomb in your backyard, that is a bunch of BS.

Course it was sarcasm :p story makes it clear they're pots and not pot the line above the one I copied

Every weapon has its use, if you get jammed into tight quarters a shortsword like the gladius can be a life saver, in a large, open area it could get you killed. Like all things it just depends on the situation. What is depicted in the story (spears) is that they ARE common because it is as you said: cheaper and easier to mass produce. Also it is easier to train someone to stand in a tight formation hidden behind a row of spears than to train them to use a sword and fight on their own. Its a matter of balancing time, materials, training and the overall situation.
Leather armor on its own is useless but hardened leather armor can be somewhat useful as it beats NO armor. However like all things you layer armor because if you wore nothing but chainmail you would die from a piercing blow but layer armor and suddenly your odds increase. One thing that you can note in the story is how those who have the money show it off by using something even if its not the best but only because it shows status. Like someone going into battle with a bright, feathery headband vs. helmet or maybe a combination of both making them a very big target, it is stupid but they like to show off their wealth and leather is one way. Look up the picture I made of Halim and note his hardened leather armor which sits over top of chainmail, its all about status and showing off and still is to this day.
I am basing this on reality and history, some things might sound stupid but people do really stupid things when money and power go to their heads be it in everyday life or the battlefield: the rich and powerful can not go one day without showing the peasantry how much better they are. Catch is, like the American Revolution showed: being the biggest strutting peacock on the battlefield gets you shot FIRST.
Last note: trickle down effect of armaments... Big pompous ass X wears frilly frou-frou to battle because they never actually fight and like to show off... Average sod see's this and wants to emulate them in wealth... Right up until they actually do to a small degree then find out it was not the brightest idea they ever had in their short lives.

True, but you can't deny swords are overrated, while other weapons are tought useless or just don't apear at all most of the time. Just wanted to help, and yes all weapons have their downsides and upsides. Swords are safer then axes/maces because of the range and the fact your hand is more protected, but are more inefficien against more advanced armor then axex and blunt weapons.
Even so, I wonder what kind of weapon will he choose? So many choises, and many choose a metal shield and a sword. Will you give a hint to what he chooses? Or do you run a no spoiler policy?
Also, I was wondering, why didn't any slavers try to capture the protagonist? Did they not managed to get a good look at him? Since he is a creature none of then know of, he would be seen as exotic so he would fetch a high price.
A Gladius or shortsword was meant to stab from behind a shield, see roman legionary. A broad sword or long sword was meant to be used from horseback and to defeat armor (metal). A Falchio, Katana and other extremely sharp blades was meant to defeat cloth armor but would fracture or break against metal armor.
All of these take a long time to master or become proficient with (if you do not fight as a part of a bigger whole), and reacquires constant maintenance.
If I was someone that needed to learn a weapon fast because my life depended on it, I would take a blunt weapon like a 2 handed maul or a 1 handed hammer and and a shield. Add a dagger and a bow and its a party.

Most weapons are overrated, actually ALL of them are because everyone seems to think one weapon will win the world like the idiotic "katana vs. longsword." There was a test done where a guy with a longsword took on another who wielded a halberd and the halberd won because of its reach. Of course gun trumps all melee weapons. On the whole there are hundreds of types of swords made for many purposes be it unarmored targets or armored opponents and therefor have long, sharp tips to pierce said armor. It just depends. As for the characters weapon choice I want to broaden things for every story I write because the last (Valkardian in Underworld) used a halberd so this guy will use something different. Maybe he will use everything... Decided to have the slavers ignore him because that would take away from "the moment" where he builds up his relationship with Asha, having the both of them being chased because they want to sell them waters down the emotions. Also if you think about it the scene makes sense: which is the better acquisition? Unknown creature that may or may not sell well or young, pretty girl who will sell really well for... Other purposes...

If you think I do not know what I am talking about let alone that I do not know what a Roman Legion is... I have been studying medieval and ancient history since I was a little kid. Frankly this is rather insulting at this point considering the amount of PM's I have answered on both my stories about weapons. Almost all weapons are meant to be used from behind a shield as you are trying to NOT get killed and the Romans used a scutum while fighting as a cohort for maximum protection. As I have already said this works well because you have maximum protection from fellow soldiers (flanks) due to dense formations (cohort) and also the ability to rotate your position so you do not exhaust yourself and die.
Longswords were not meant to be used purely from horseback, that is total BS, a claymore, gendarme, etc were for footman exclusively and any use of a longsword on horseback was purely because it had better reach than most other weapons. Never forget that most used SPEARS all through history or lances because that has even better reach than the longsword.
Swords will not fracture NOR break against metal armor, that is a MYTH. They will blunt themselves and CHIP if struck edge on edge but if they shatter you have a poorly made blade which is the fault of the SMITH not the BLADE. Many weapons were made to defeat armor and swords are included, look into any half decent armament book and you will find plenty of swords that come to a very sharp point made for stabbing through armor. Weapons that were made purely to defeat armor however includes the warpick's that have their "eagle claw" for cutting through armor, the "war hammer" is also included in this category, some have a spike on the end for added "umpf" if you ram it into someones gut, it works too, tests have proven it.
Any weapon takes time to become proficient with depending on what you are doing. To fight alone takes TIME because you must learn to fight one on one but it takes less time to learn to fight as a formation using the same weapon. It just depends on what you are being trained to DO with said weapon. Yes maintenance becomes an issue but all armaments require it to various degrees even bows, that is something that just becomes second nature as you are trained to use them to prevent weapon degradation like an archer failing to wax their string.
Also they are called War Hammers or War Picks. Your choice of blunt trauma through the armor or a piercing blow.
9078845
No no. I did not mean it like a insult so if you felt insulted am sorry. But you have to agree that if you had to do upkeep on a weapon a sword is harder to keep in shape than a bow hammer or a pick.
9078910
Which is why most armies have historically leaned away from them except for one: the Roman army, they had the logistical nightmare of a machine needed to keep it all up from training to supplies. However, as they collapsed we see how they rapidly did away with swords in favor of... Spears.
This is a good story. A little slow, but my favorite series of books are even slower. You are not like King and go into detail over everything, but you still go into some to get a solid picture and idea of how things are, and how they look. Keep doing what you're doing.

The romans only used swords for close up engagements they used spears and javelines normally even at their height
