I think this quote describes Verik perfectly. Love the chapter, went far deeper than I was expecting. I only wish I had found this story much later than I did so I didn't have to deal with waiting for the next chapter, for a short time at least.
Always glad to see another chapter!
May I offer some conservative criticism? There are times when your dialogue gets very confusing, especially when there are more than two characters involved, as was the case with this chapter.
What makes your dialogue so confusing is the fact that you do not mention who it is that is speaking.
Example
Regularly mentioning who it is that is speaking may become redundant after awhile, but it will help greatly in reducing confusion.
Example
I can't wait to hold the hard copy of the book/ anthology this will turn into. Hello next few years of my life
I can't wait till our heroes take up arms, the rescue of the sister, and I will be ready with popcorn, and a soda...

Half true, the bulk of the army used the gladius while auxiliaries used bows and spears, they had every corner covered in a fight if they were up against cavalry or infantry. Squaring off against infantry were the cohorts (hastati, principe->legionnaire in general after reformation) which carried short swords and not spears. Each legionnaire also carried at least two pilum for throwing which helped break up the enemy ranks as they assaulted the Roman ranks or just prior to battering the enemy ranks themselves. The use of their scutum (tower shield, special design) was made to work with a gladius and not spears.
Romans used swords as their primary tool save the beginning of their nation when they were based on the Greek phalanx and then again when they began to collapse. It is well documented how the Roman legions fell apart equipment wise until the spear was all they could afford.
Oh and one last thing: ALL combat at this time period was a CLOSE UP ENGAGEMENT!
nice now we shall see if his clams of being well educated is well merited or not, readings such as sun tzu's art of war, the history of genghis khan, alexander the great, hannibal barca, saladin, charlemange, scipio africanus, julius caesar, shaka zulu ,and many other's to take inspiration from and put to use,
and if he is successful in his ambition to over throw a tyrant
and place him self as ruler to learn from his predecessors bring a new golden age and whether or not he can prevent a form of bronze age collapse

Ahhh if it were so easy to be well read (Never said he was "well educated" in the traditional sense) or educated and to be able to just step into power... There is a large gap between theory and practice as was hinted at in "Hardball."
Finally getting down to business.
Awww, yeah!
