This story is a sequel to Scrambled Serenity
Princess Celestia is a very well-adjusted mare. Life in Equestria is often as orderly as she is.
Personally, Celestia has had few surprises — oh, there were a few: the unexpected return of her dear sister, Discord's return, the Crystal Empire's, and Tirek's escape. Maybe there were a few others, but most things, she finds, are nice and calculated.
Now, Princess Celestia has a very big surprise, and it all starts with a few cracks in a single egg.

She appears again, in Enemy of Mine, but has yet to appear, however she's (the daughter) is still a secondary character. Celestia is the focal character.
That wasn't unexpected. She pretty much had the entire timeline laid out by a very convenient prophecy and was on the lookout for the Bearers from the get-go.
Prophecies kinda let you cheat a lot. Like that Star Wars prophecy in the prequels... that vague, completely unexplained prophecy... I mean, at least in most cases you learn who made the prophecy and stuff... but really, that was so nebulous I wouldn't be surprised if Yoda read the prophecy out of a newspaper horoscope.
Same with Celestia: The Princess sighs, "Oh will my dear sister ever return. Magic 8 Ball?" She shakes it and reads 'Signs point to yes.... also find 6 random mares to throw at all your problems...'

Not really. In this continuity, she only thought that the whole 'stars aid in her escape' thing might be real shortly before Sunset Shimmer came into play - there's a few stories I wrote about it/that mention it frequently.
So Luna's return was entirely unexpected, and the main six were mostly chance.

And so we see that it was an "Eraserhead" crossover the whole time! What a twist!

Well, the heir apparent is usually the child of the ruler. Equestria has two clear rulers, Tia and Luna. Cady rules the Empire and Twilight manages Ponyville and helps with other events in Equestria. The only clear heirs would be any children Luna or Tia would have. It would also depend on if children produced from unmarried or married relationships are prioritized/considered legitimate.
TLDR; Twilight was not in a position to be heir.

Well, this was a delightful birth story.
I find it funny that I've seen the artwork of this baby (I think) before I read this story, lol. Great job on the description either way though. I got a great mental image of her.
Really put me behind Celestia's eyes in this one. You write Celestia as so dutiful and bound to tradition/honor that something like an unexpected child not only upends her world, but how she thinks of it (and herself), and you explore that in an engaging, yet believable way. It makes this and Scrambled Serenity have way more depth to them.

Too bad there wasn't a third part to this. Would love to have seen Celestia grow into being prepared for her parenthood. After all, no one is truly prepared to be a parent.

The closest thing there is to a third part is Enemy of Mine, but that's not really focused on Celestia's kid specifically. She does show up, though, and as a little goober old enough to talk, too. So, a fairly big goober!
