The crossdressing thing was created so that they could sell Final Fight in America, because the Capcom USA group at the time were upset of the idea of men beating up a women. So, if you go by original creation, she is female, Street Fighter and Tekken she is Post Op Trans, and Final fight she is Newhalf Crossdresser.

As DrakeyC said, the correct answer in all of those is "she is a she". And if we want to be true to the original - the post op trans-woman was made by her creator FOR Capcom USA, but still did not fly and they replaced Poison AND Roxy (her palette swap, and pure female by most sources) with two generic male goons - Billy and Sid for the first US release. As the change was one opted for by her creator, it flew in later renditions of Capcom's material, and eventually America acknowledged she was a transgender character; in Japan (technically original source, thus TRUE canon) she's a newhalf CD, thus to go by true source she is male, thus Sunset would be cross-playing, not just cosplaying if she went with it ...
Would still hit that like the hoof of an angry alicorn, though

8015606 That was for only one console, they released that game on two consoles, and in the USA, the SEGA CD version had Poison and Roxy with less revealing clothing, while SNES had Billy and Sid, and the Newhalf CD was what the creator of the characters used to explain it to Capcom USA, they were originally meant to just be women, but well, Capcom USA messed that up. Either way, a lot of people treat them like women, and in the latest Street Fighter X Tekken game, the controversy is never brought up in game, and everyone calls her a her. So.. meh. It's really all dependent on which version of her you mean, Original Japanese version, American Final Fight Sega, Street Fight and Street Fighter x Tekken, and any others really.. but hey, I will still call her a her. She's more lady like than quite a few girls I knew back during Highschool and Middleschool.

And while I can appreciate that, yes, the version changes and disputes of Poison's gender are abundant and confusing across games - Capcom's Final Fight series and Street Fighter series SHARE a continuity, so what happened in one to set Poison is retroactive to all others. Need proof that they share continuity? Cammy in a Final Fight game, while Cody, Gai, Rolento, and Sodom in Street Fighter games. I might have missed a character or two in crossovers, but hey - I'm a decade outside of playing Street Fighter and final Fight franchise games. Guilty Gear and King of Fighters are more my speed now.
