On the other hoof, he also didn't ask to sit next to a stranger on the train, to be given her charity far more than he deserved, and to find in her a kinship he didn't expect.

But sometimes, you can find warmth in the most unlikely of places.

It is a world of freedom, where all biological needs are eliminated and you can live forever doing whatever it is that pleases you.

But for some, Equestria can seem less a paradise and more a prison, an artificial and manufactured place where nothing is real and everything is a simulated lie to make you feel comfortable. Perhaps, even the feelings of the mare sitting next to you holding your hoof. How could you ever be sure even your own feelings are truly yours if you're just a program stored on a server?

Does living in Equestria mean Twilight Sparkle has to choose between her heart and her soul?

I mean, it's not like she forgot "oh yeah, I care about this holiday now" and didn't do her gift shopping until the last minute, giving her only a few hours to find six inspired, heartfelt, thought-out gifts for her closest friends.

Twilight Sparkle has always respected the laws of science and magic. It's a respect that got her a scholarship to SGU, where she formed a small but comfortable group of friends and has received top grades in her two years there. It's a life that makes sense.

With her final year beginning and a special instruction from the Princess to bond with a fellow pupil, Twilight has enough to fill her life and her mind. It doesn't make sense that she should have recurring dreams about a mysterious mare, that this mare seems eerily familiar despite being a total stranger, or that she can recall the dreams with unusual clarity.

Twilight has questions about Equestria and about herself, and the answers could reshape her perception of both. She begins her research with a central question:

Down in Klugetown, they don't celebrate Hearth's Warming Eve like Equestria does. The residents of Klugetown don't do anything like the ponies do. And if you were someone who would call yourself a friend of ponies, you'd have a tough time making it in Klugetown, a place where a friend is a liability to one's health and fortune. Living in Klugetown required one to be smart, and it's not smart to have friends. Only stupid creatures have friends in Klugetown, which is when they start hoping they're lucky, because they have an uphill battle to stay afloat.

Whoever said it was better to be lucky than smart might have been on to something. Because a pony like her, you only meet that kind when you're lucky and stupid. And if you're smart, you'll realize it'll never happen and you should stop thinking about it.

But you didn't meet her and fall in love because you were smart.
