Paper wasn't always an inexpensive commodity machine-made from wood pulp.
Parchment was made from animal skin, and candles were made from bee's wax or animal fat. A scholarly life was an expensive one. Paper, even the cheaper type made from papyrus, would be more costly than most foods.
Interruption censoring is my favorite.
