Donnys Boy

My name is Donny's Boy. I ship ponies.

T
Source

Some ponies would say it’s crazy to miss an apple tree. Some ponies would say it’s crazy to want to throw a party for the apple tree you miss. And all of those someponies would probably be right.

This is a story about two crazy ponies who decide to take a fateful trip out to Appleloosa.

least shippy

This is a pleasant surprise. I like your shipping, but I follow you for your writing. Still, if it does turn into some form of ApplePie, that's almost as delicious as Twinkie and that would be wonderful.

Personally, I think those robbers are going to have a bad time. You don't hold up the Elements, a pony who can summon a cannon at will, and a pony who can crumple trees with a kick of her hooves. Still, it will be amusing to see how far they get.

marching with grim, resolute dedicate down to the mailbox

Small issue.

least shippy ship fic

Nuuuu but Apple Pie tho

Eh, it'll still be great! We've had some really interesting moments already, so I'm excited to see where we're gonna go!

Love the Raymond Chandler approach you took. When in doubt, just make someone enters with a gun! Or add ninjas, they work too.
It might be less shippy but there´s clearly ApplePie and Lord knows I love ApplePie. The shipping, not the actual apple pie which I think it´s icky. :pinkiesick:
Ah, I missed that prompt.
I´m really liking this one :pinkiehappy:

Ah ApplePie. Another underrated ship. Actually if you think about it, all the mane six Pinkie Pie ships are underrated.

Well except for RainbowPie, but I don't want to talk about that one. :pinkiesad2:

Every time I see an ApplePie story, I'm like 'ApplePiiiiie! Best ship name is best ship name!'

I think you said that in one of your blogs and now its what I think of all ApplePie stories.

Anyway, I havnt read it yet, this is my pre-read spill. You, DB, are responsable for my entire list of ships. Like, I read you back on fanfiction when i first started reading MLP stories.

You got me hooked like a drug addict on RainbowPie.

Then I came over here... And now I just ship Pinkie with everypony else in the Mane6

...Except Fluttershy. You dont write much FlutterPie, so I've yet to get hooked on it. Oh well. There's still time.

Anyway! Im sorry for the ramble! Ima go read now!

I like it! The letter was pure gold. You write Pinkie like no one else, sir.

Action oriented Western?!

Color me intrigued and excited.

like the beginning looks to be another great read

2957591
It'll still probably be pretty shippy, 'cause it's me, but I always try to approach my stories as stories first and foremost and as ship fics second. If that makes any sense.

2957825
Thanks for the catch! Is fixed now.

I'd joke about the assumption that the shipping is gonna be ApplePie instead of, say, BraePie, but I know you read my Tumblr, sooo ... Heh.

2958551
Thanks! And there will be more explanation for why there are suddenly train robbers, so hopefully it will seem a little less random. *fingers crossed*

2958828
I adore nearly all Pinkie Pie ships. They are my life force. And, uh ... maybe don't read the very first pony stories I wrote, if you're not so much with the RainbowPie ... ahem. :rainbowderp:

2959375
It is the best ship name! Narrowly beating out Twinkie, granted, but still. :pinkiehappy::ajsmug: Glad you liked the letter!

2959683
2960374
Well, that's my intention, but we'll see. Knowing me, the ratio of action to ponies talking endlessly about their feelings will be pretty skewed. I am trying, though! I CAN CHANGE! I CAN GROW!

2961798
Hopefully! Glad to hear you think it's off to a decent start!

2962486

Yeah I think Pinkie ships well with everypony, except for Rainbow Dash, which is ironic because that was the first ship I ever got into in this fandom. I guess over time I've felt that the connection between the two characters in the show has only gotten worse, but that't just me. It's still a popular ship these days and I still respect it for that.:twilightsmile:

Whoah, what? That came out of nowhere. Though, I guess it wouldn't be much a train robbery if everyone saw them coming. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Small typo

Applejack stopped grinned. “Beg pardon?”

Alright.... alright here I go, ready to take the plunge into my first ApplePie story.

2962527
RainbowPie was my first pony ship, too. I definitely think the two have gotten less screen time in Seasons 2 and 3, for whatever reasons.

2962754
I'll try not to suck! Also, thanks for the catch--that oughta be fixed, now.

2963199
I shall do my utmost to not squander it!

2964113
IT WILL BE OKAY, LITTLE SHIPPER. Actually, if you're gonna read some ApplePie, you oughta chuck this story out the window and go take a look at Esle Ynopemos' "Stubborn as Ponies." It's wonderful, and I completely adore it.

2968172

Agreed. I feel like some of the other Pinkie ships could be making a rise.

2968172 Well I'll certainly look into that recommendation, but yeah I also liked your first chapter, though I'm a bit worried about what will happen next.

This looks like it's going to be interesting.

> water sp-
:pinkiegasp:
 Aw, c'mon, now, AppleJack... rocks don't need as much water as apple trees.
(Water chute, though, if memory serves.)

Given what I've read on your Tumblr, I am very concerned about these bandits.

But this is an Apple Pie fic by Donny's Boy, so I am a happy camper. Buckling in for the ride, and eagerly waiting to see how it turns out.

ermagherd dat cliffhanger :raritydespair:

Ah man....I love your stuff and this is looking like it's not gonna disappoint. Also ApplePie really does have the best ship name and there really does need to be more of it so thank you for your contribution. Looking forward to how this whole train robbers thing is gonna play out!

2968555
You're supposed to be worried! There are VARMINTS on the train! :raritywink:

(No pressure re: "Stubborn as Ponies," by the way. I just love it to bits and think it's THE ApplePie story that all others ought be judged by.)

2973698
Hopefully! I will try!

2988582
I think I thought a water spout is basically the same thing as a water chute. I guess it's not? I will change that.

In my pathetic defense, the only thing I've ever farmed was a pumpkin I grew in my mom's vegetable garden when I was four.

2990518
Captain Donny thinks there's some upcoming turbulence, so hang tight!

2994239
:pinkiehappy:

2999633
Aww, thanks!

I see the bandits need some confetti to fix them right up. Maybe they'll even help with the irrigation after they've been to a proper Pinkie Pie Party. Then again, real life is cruel and depressing. Maybe parties can't fix everything, but I hope it won't stop Pinkie from trying. At least, it's nice to see the inclusion of Braeburn and Little Strongheart. They rarely get much exposure in stories since they're so far away from the typical setting of Ponyville.

I'm liking it so far...
...but it did seem a little bit out-of-character for AJ and Pinkie to start beating up robbers, especially with Apple Bloom right there.
I dunno. Maybe it's just me.

3000615 After facing down a horde of changelings?

3001096

Well, think about it. When they fought the changelings, A) they were attempting to retrieve the Elements, B) it was either that or fail all of Equestria, C) they didn't have a young pony with them to protect.
In this case, they could have easily just given the robbers their bits instead of aggressing, which was obviously dangerous and could have easily ended with a lot more damage than AJ's cut on the shoulder. Apple Bloom could have been seriously injured, or possibly kidnapped; somepony could have died if things had really gone bad.
My point is, that while yes, the Mane Six are not normal people/ponies even by Equestrian standards, I'm not sure they would immediately resort to violence instead of just going along with the will of somepony holding a knife--especially while in the presence of a child.

(Also, hi!)

3001200 I will point out that that's exactly why AJ waited 'til Pinkie ran away with AB in tow before assaulting them.

Heh! Hehehehe! HAHA...! Ha...

I don't know about the rest of you, but if I woke up in a hospital with a numb shoulder, a drought town with dying trees, a legion of bandits, and a doctor affectionately dubbed 'Sawbones'...

Well, I'd be a bit scared.

And that's why Applejack is best pony. She took that all in stride. Anyway, I'm tracking this as of right now. Unfortunately, I don't have a useful review for this potentially wonderful tale. Not yet. Though, I'm sure that will change next chapter. The foreshadowing is layered, but deliciously transparent. As usual, your work plays with the mind and makes it think while we try to sleep. Hmm... Don't know whether to praise or shun you for that...

Until next time, I'll be waiting.

3001548
3001760

I can see your points.
Something--I'm not really sure what--still feels off, but you're both definitely right about everything you said, so..

3000555
I like Brae and Little Strongheart, so I'm glad I was able to write for them at least a bit. Also, at the risk of being annoyingly cryptic, something in your comment made something go click in my head about how I want the story to end. The general outline of the plot has been finished for a long while, but there were specifics in the final chapter that I was still struggling with until you said what you said--so thank you very, very much for that!

I think the question of violence in the MLP universe is an interesting one. I think the show itself treats the issue variably, with its slice of life episodes being much more violence-adverse than its big adventure episodes at the beginnings and endings of seasons. Also, I tend not to write the characters as completely show-accurate, since most of my stories involve themes that are more mature than the show--though I think that's not what journcy meant by Pinkie and AJ feeling OOC.

I had it in my head that AJ and Pinkie's primary goal was to get AB away from the train robbers, with AJ leaping into action mostly to give Pinkie a chance to skedaddle. I wasn't thinking of their actions as any sort of ideal for the situation--I honestly have no idea what would be ideal, there--but as something they might do if suddenly presented with potential danger like that. I'm sorry it felt off, though, for those to whom it did.

3003626
Applejack is not my personal best pony, but she's a fantastic pony. I've always liked and found it interesting that her stubborn tenacity is one of her biggest strengths and biggest weaknesses. :ajsmug:

I foresee a harrowing, bandit-filled adventure into the foothills. Ah, it's been too long since I read a good Western. I never would have expected to see this sort of story on this site, but I guess that speaks to the versatility of the FiM universe. It seems you can do just about anything you want with it.

Another good chapter, I liked how AJ's stubborness actually brought on some real consequences. Also happy to see more Braeburn, though I think he may be in over his head, good thing he has Little Strongheart to keep him company. Interested to see how you'll make the ApplePie work in the context of the adventure that will undoubtedly come from the water issue.

A fun little chapter! Looking forward to more!

You know, after that season 4 teaser at Bronycon, I have a feeling this ship is going to be growing over the next year or so.:ajsmug:

3011105 Wait, is there hints of Apple Pie in the s4 teaser?

Dangit, now my desire to avoid spoilers is in conflict with my need for more Apple Pie!

3012296

Whoops whoops whoops! Sorry about that!

Don't worry, I'll make it up for you! :pinkiehappy:

3007698
I make no promises that this will be a good western, but it will be a western. Of some sort. THERE'S BANDITS IN THEM THAR HILLS!

And yes, I agree. I've read mysteries, romances, comedies, horror stories, and lots more. Some of that is probably just people writing AUs and such, but part of it is undoubtedly that the show itself offers a range of different genres.

3009021
Oh, I'm glad you liked that bit! Yeah, I'm hoping to explore a bit about AJ's stubborn side in this story and have it actually have consequences and such. We'll see how that goes.

Season 4: The Season of ApplePie!

I have seen the spoilers and, yes, it is quite shippy. The ApplePie folks should be very, very pleased, I think.

3033912

ApplePie is a fun little ship. I really want to try my hand/hoof at a story with this pairing sometime in the future. Just gotta wait for the right spark to come along.:ajsmug:

It always feels like Applejack is trying to prove her strength and worth to herself more than anypony else and you capture that pretty well in my opinion.

The shipping instensifies! Or maybe I´m the only one anxious for them to kiss. Yeah, I can picture doing that in the middle of an intense fight with the bandits. Pinkie strikes me as the kind that would kiss her in the heat of battle. So cute!

We don't have to worry about getting Braeburn and Little Strongheart together now.
As for Bloomberg well if they don't get the water well you know what will happened.

Last line ponies!!!!

Huh... The hypocrisy of various villains, while quite appropriate, never fails to astonish me. "Things are more even now that we outnumber you four to one and you're injured". The fact some people actually think like this, where anything that gives them the advantage is fair and anything that means they might lose isn't, is insane.

I'm still trying to decide if this is in character or not. I mean, I can't say Applejack doesn't have a history of this kind of poor decision (see her running away after failing to get first, as if placing in every event was easy, and trying to do both her and her brother's work by herself without asking for help) but it seems like she hasn't really learned anything if she keeps doing it.

Oh and shipping, I guess.

3057383
I tend to think so, too. Rainbow Dash is kind of the same way, and she's louder and flashier about it, but I think AJ has many of the same tendencies.

3058250
Shipping? I have noooo idea what you're talking about. Nope. None at all. :pinkiehappy:

3059027
Aww, thanks. I know we already talked a bit off-site about what I had planned for what Pinkie wants to talk about (a bit, fat NOTHING), so here's an official thank you for giving me the idea to work that bit into a later chapter.

3059627
So you think Braeburn and Little Strongheart are a couple, huh? What made you think that, if you don't mind my asking? (You're not wrong, mind you--but I wasn't really going to make it all that explicit in the story, just 'cause that's not really what this story happens to be about.)

3059639
:ajsmug:

3060025
I think the lessons that the Mane Six learn over the course of the series are kinda ... hmm ... two steps forward, one step back, I guess? They grow, and they make progress, but there are backslides and goof-ups along the way. I'm not sure where this story fits into all of that, to be honest. Mostly, I just wanted to approach the idea of an ApplePie fic where it's AJ who has to do some learning and growing more so than Pinkie Pie does.

The unicorn hostage-situation is a wonderful touch here; I love the effort you've put in to creating the wild-west vibe while still keeping things incredibly Equestrian.
I'm also falling over from the suspense here, so great job with that. Seriously, I'm loving this ApplePie. You should do more adventure-shipping - this is fantastic.

damnable cliff hangers! :fluttershbad:

Gurl please Pinkie's already dodged
LIKE SRS

This really is a Western town- though it does feel a little weird to have them doing the facing away from eachother style of dueling instead of a quick draw contest, given the latter is more commonly associated with Westerns.

She's got Pinkie Senses!!! Nothing can beat that.

What a cliff hanger, and excellent job building up the tension to it, and juxtaposing it with the party to make the sudden appearance of the gang more startling and jarring. Great chapter all around. I hope you do more with that pegasus than just 'evil non-specific Western-themed robber gang person' though.

3114531
Aww, that's really nice of you to say--especially because I'm still pretty insecure about my action-writin' abilities here. Thanks!

3114546
DUN DUN DUUUUUN.

3114851
3116287
:pinkiehappy:

3114925
Confession: The only western I've ever seen is Back to the Future Part III. Which actually involves the style of duel that involves the duelists facing each other for a quickdraw, so I have no idea why my brain told me to write them as starting back-to-back.

3117280
Next chapter shouldn't take as long! It's written and just needs to be revised. And I'm really glad you're still liking the story.

3119429
Yay! I'm glad you felt the sudden reappearance of The Bandits worked out okay. I wanted to bring 'em back for one last dust-up, but I didn't want it to seem forced.

The next chapter will have some more stuff with the pegasus, though there won't be quite as much fleshing out her characte as I generally like to do, unfortunately.

3119848
Well, if you ever feel like seeing some, I recommend A Fistful of Dollars and The Good the Bad and the Ugly (especially the uncut versions, for some reason they trimmed the American release just to make a shorter run time). If you can take gritty, Unforgiven is also really good, but darker than the others.
