Many decades ago—perhaps even centuries now—a realization hit me. To this day it haunts my thoughts. Time has us all in its thrall. Though my body may resist its ever-present pestilence, that does not make me immune to the inevitable decay.

I keep these troubling thoughts locked away, hidden where no eye may cast its gaze on them. But that does not mean that they do not exist, or that they do not weigh heavily on my mind. Every so often they come back to plague me, to remind me that even I cannot escape time. All I can do is mitigate the erosion; it's all anypony can do.

Two decades after the banishment of Nightmare Moon, her shadow still lingers. Princess Celestia has been left to tend the Twin Thrones alone and protect us all from those who would see Equestria crumble. Fine's life is far from easy. He doesn't know what his next meal will be or where he'll be sleeping on any given night. Then there's the gruesome murders. He never wanted to be what he is, but he tries to take life one kill at a time. Some day he might even be able to put the weapon down for good.

Having it taken from him by a homeless foal is not what he had in mind.

Fine has discovered a filly who stands at a precipice. With one wrong step, she could lead the same kind of life he does. Fine will do anything to keep her from walking that path. He knows what it's like to be a monster. He has a chance to do the right thing, and he won't let it slip through his hooves.

However, you always expect some kind of minor surprise, like your train arriving a little too late, or your ice-cream having vanilla taste rather than strawberry. But sometimes, life will give you surprises you could never predict. For Fluttershy, it was three little foals. But not her own foals, or even orphans. Three little foals that used to be her and her friends' most fearsome and dreaded foes.

Will Fluttershy's nerves survive this onslaught of misadventures? Will she keep the three villains hidden? Will she even become friends with them? Why do I sound like a narrator to a bad criminal drama? Don't think or try to answer those questions, just go ahead and read!

That was before a simple mix-up introduced him to Derpy.

Now on a date with the wall-eyed pegasus, he finds out that sometimes a pony needs another to sleep peacefully.

And it may just be the most difficult trick Trixie's ever attempted.
