Strumming Heartstrings of the Equestrian Intelligence Services is on a mission. A mission from ... well, actually she just made one up for herself. Sure, she has her actual job of keeping an eye on Celestia's ex-student Sunset Shimmer, but that's not enough to occupy all her time. After all, Sunset seems to have gotten a bit better about not getting herself into too much trouble. Sometimes. Occasionally.

Thus, when Strumming encounters a mad zebra seemingly obsessed with getting revenge against the gryphons who injured him years ago, it seems like it might be an interesting diversion. Little does she know there's more to this case than meets the eye...

Why can't anything go as planned? All I wanted was to go on a date with the girl of my dreams, finish college, and hopefully settle down with a family somewhere. However, due to an unlucky set of circumstances, I am instead thrust into a world of magic and intrigue, forced to do battle for the amusement of bored Demons and Gods.

On top of that, my patron deity is a lying, stingy jerk who's only goal seems to be my immediate discomfort and misery.

However, I can't just back out. If I do, I will never be able to return home. At least, I'll never be able to return home in one piece...

This story is inspired by (not copied from) the chessverse. It has absolutely no bearing on that universe, will not feature any of the unique characters from those stories, and will not involve it in any way. I just liked the idea of a story about the Gods playing with the lives of mortals, and wanted to take a crack at the idea.

It's Cadance's first Hearts and Hooves Day since she's come into her own as the Princess of Love, and she has high hopes for it. However, the day starts with a visit to Twilight's classroom that doesn't go at all the way she planned, and from there things only spiral further into chaos. If the rest of Equestria actually knew that disaster was one missed pill away, I don't think 'riots in the streets' would be sufficient to cover it. But I'm bound by Doctor/Patient Confidentiality, so I guess I'm the thin red line between civilization, and eternal enslavement by some horror from beyond.

That eternal enslavement thing sounds better every day, mind you.

With some of the world's wealthiest scum and villains attending, who walks out with the book could have consequences far beyond the islands.
