Upon blowing the candles, Spike receives a gift that speaks only to him. He decides to ignore it, however, until he starts doing things he would never do before.

The girls notice Spike's odd behavior, and confront him.

The students at Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns must hatch a dragon during their entrance exam. Once the dragons come of age, however, they must be released to rejoin the wild dragon flock. The students have cared for their dragons since they hatched, so it's understandable for special friendships to form between student and dragon. One such relationship was forged between a certain purple unicorn and a young, wingless dragon. Princess Celestia allowed Spike to stay, but she made him make a promise. As the years drag on, it becomes harder and harder for him to keep that promise.
