You'd think Rarity would try to talk to her friends who are more susceptible to the reality of her being a Changeling first, like Pinkie or Fluttershy, to win their support, before talking to the friend who had the hardest time with them.

If her friends and family truly cared about her, no it wouldn't. Of course, because of Chrysalis, she would have to prove she was always a Changeling and not just one replacing the true Rarity. But that's easy to do, as the Element of Generosity should react exactly like it always has with her.

What you are suggesting is that they trust a changeling, that they have no reason to trust, with one of the Elements; that they need for an unrelated crisis or B to zap the changeling with. Now before that last idea sounds like a winner it has never been confirmed that the mane six can choose what they do...
A more logical response from everypony would be to lock her up. With the possible exception of The Royal Sisters the general public has no idea whether a changeling has the capability to be anything but evil. We are more likely to see investigations, interrogations and expeditions to locate the real Rarity. (Harmony help her if she based her form off of a real pony and they find her instead; which would actually be rather funny).

In olden times it wasn't considered racist or, sometimes, wrong as science couldn't confirm that black people were homosapien for the longest time. The reason I bring that bit of trivia up is because I doubt Rarity even knows whether changelings are more related to ponies or bugs. We, personally, are incredibly related to apes but mice are used in drug tests and other pursuits.

Despite not being closely related they function like us, genetically, much more than our ape cousins.
Why? Name one reason why you thought they would be positive. I am curious. This is their first experience with your ethnicity. We have 3,000+ years of history to fall back on. I only need today and yesterday to know that another ethnicity has the capability to be good.

Fluttershy is the expert on fear. She knows exactly what all she is afraid of and could probably make a list to rival some of Twilight’s, so of course she can tell the difference between “I’m scared of changelings out to get me” on the one hoof and “I’m just scared of changelings in general” on the other easily enough.
