From only my own personal experience, depression doesn't always show up as something like cutting or angsty poetry. More often, again, just from experience, it shows up as just being so, so tired and feeling unable to do basic things to function, and overthinking every little thing. I tried to express some of that here.
Whew, with TCB fics an the world itself, it's a slippery slope to deal with that raises a lotta questions, the most simple one being...
Do you want to change yourself or not? Give in the potion and become a pony, change who you originally were despite the rumors about it messing with your mind? Or do you let the Dome destroy you and all you know, erasing you from existence?
It's crazy stuff... crazy stuff.

The Conversion Bureau - depending on your headcanon for it - involves Equestria finding our own world and seeing how drastically different and violent our society and lifestyles are, as well as polluting our world and all that good stuff, they come here and establish the Conversion Bureaus when they make contact. These bureaus are designed to attract humans with the promise of a better life, but they have to take a potion and change into a pony. If you don't, the dome that is slowly enveloping the globe - imagine a giant pink dome expanding slowly over the world - will completely destroy you, erasing you from history.
In this particular TCB universe, the potion has been said to drastically alter a person's state of mind and change who they are deep down inside, erasing who that person is and making them happy and stuff, not in a good way. They're permanently and blindly happy and go lucky in a sickening way, it's not real happiness either, it's something more... sinister.
The other version of TCB I think is a little... different, but I haven't read much of it. The one I write and the one Anonpencil did is more along the lines of what I just explained.
