Princess Cadance has some problems in her sovereignty over the Crystal Empire. For one thing, she isn't even a crystal pony. To prevent civil war, Cadance has a brilliant idea to ensure her bid for the throne while pleasing the people: have an election.

Creepy Crawly, a young crystal filly, is left an orphan after King Sombra's Time Skip spell sends her a thousand years forward... without her parents. Without prospective parents in the Crystal Empire, she decides to leave the city on her own... and ends up finding out that love, and families, can be found in the strangest places.
