Modern Equestrian society had the awful habit of making victims out of all too many good ponies. That was what happened when both law and underworld crime tried to simultaneously enforce their idea of "social good." Fluttershy was one pony stuck in the middle—a victim of an unscrupulous gang but whom authorities were unwilling to aid. Where could one turn when the virtues of honor and chivalry seemed dead?

We all know the story of how the Princess’ young student and five friends defeated Nightmare Moon and brought Princess Luna back to our lands. But what if the tale were false? What if the young Twilight Sparkle on the event of her entrance exam had not been rescued by Princess Celestia, but instead lost her mind among the power of her youthful surge and had to be sent away, far away before she could destroy all of Canterlot with her newfound power. Now the feral unicorn prowling the Everfree Forest only vaguely remembers her past, slipping away from constant terrifying attempts to capture her.

And she is beginning to remember what true power felt like.

Princess Luna still feels alone, nineteen years after her return to Equestria . But when she finds a friend in an online game, everything seems better. She can be herself without worrying about what others think, and she can finally talk to another pony, even if he never knows who she really is.

Celestia is worried about her sister, especially right now. Upcoming peace talks with a powerful new nation mean that all the Princesses need to be completely ready. With her Luna so absorbed in a fantasy world, she wonders how she'll make it through the harrowing weeks to come.

Button Mash feels like a failure. He's still living at home, he still can't find work that can use his degree from the university, and he still feels alone. His friends are getting married, starting families, and thriving in their careers. On the plus side, he plays games regularly, and his best friend is a mare, even if she doesn't know his name. He hopes that his upcoming vacation to Canterlot might help his mindset.

But, unbeknownst to all of them, a sinister web within a dark plot threatens to ensnare Equestria... And Luna may be the only one able to stop it.

She may face it alone, or maybe she'll have some help from her knight in faded armor...

Edited by m1ntf4n, PheonixStarr, Wing, and the_Doc, and Swan Song, and Orion Caelum.

Follows canon up to about season 4 or so. I'm not sure when everything went off the rails, but it was originally as true as possible when initially written.

Thanks to Horizon, for the Versebreaker 'Verse. Though Celestia Hates Us All is a stand-alone, I highly recommend the other Versebreaker stories.
Thanks also to two very different geniuses: Mary Shelley and Tony Iommi.

Ponyville is a lovely little place. Despite its loveliness, I have always been rather lonely.

That is, until you moved to town.

I think this could be the start of something beautiful, don't you?

"A[n] effectively chilling piece."- Horse Voice

.. wha? – Luzz

Well, that started off weird, then got creepy and then...I approve. - Admiral Biscuit

A bit unsettling, sure, but too vague for me. – Spectral

This was decent. It could have been more subtle/mysterious in places to make it creepier. - jeray2000

Splendid story. Came here on a recommendation and certainly wasn't disappointed. – Orbiting Kettle

I really loved this. It got way darker than I was expecting. Loved the slow buildup. When I finally realized who it was about, my heart sunk. - Protopony350

If you are easily disturbed by your inconsolable fear of the unknown, do yourself a favor, and run as fast as you can.

"A Story about You" is a literary device from Welcome to Night Vale. It is not mine, this literary device. It is theirs. You don't need to be familiar with them, to become familiar with this. Find them by doing a quick search of the terrifyingly vast void we call the internet.

So to cheer himself up he decides to go spend time with his friends. Five stalwart companions whom he has known through thick and thin.

But Spike soon begins to realise that really, those are Twilight's friends. Not his.

In fact he starts to wonder whether, since he moved to Ponyville, he's actually made any friends at all...
