As Twilight predicted, Sunset Shimmer gave out a lot of apologies after the Fall Formal.

As Princess Celestia told Sunset long before --when she dismissed Sunset as her student-- apologies aren't always enough. Sometimes actions have consequences that can't be escaped with a simple: "I'm sorry."

Sunset remembers Celestia's words after a run in with fellow students --ones who weren't satisfied with mere apologies-- leaves her lying on the ground, in pain, in a Canterlot alley.

This wasn't originally intended to be a quiet thinking and reminiscing piece, it just sort of turned out like that. Ditto on it being both long enough and complete enough to be a legitimate one-shot.

As noted in various places, my depression has been . . . pretty much killing my ability to do anything remotely creative. So when something breaks through that it's very, very welcome. This was such a thing.

It's simple and short and exactly as straightforward as the above description implies.

While tearfully repairing the wall she destroyed, Sunset Shimmer can't help but reflect on what a horrible person she is. Convinced she'll never be forgiven by her peers, and unsure if she's even worthy of it, she's visited in the night by one of the last people she expected.

Twelve years ago, Sunset Shimmer ran away from Equestria and left her whole life behind her. In traversing the portal, she became a five year old human girl. Through trials and tribulations she grew up, eventually forgetting her true origins.

Three years ago, she learned the truth. Yesterday, her rage culminated in one night of fire and vengeance. The powers of Harmony defeated her, and offered a second chance. Change her ways and heal her heart.

Today she takes her first steps on the path to her new life.

Sunset Shimmer was highly known ever since the Fall Formal incident. That is, until she unexpectedly commited suicide, via knife to the chest. They came to the conclusion that it was depression which lead her to take her own life away.

However, not everyone agrees.

Together, the rest of the Mane gather clues and information, in an effort to find the real reason behind her suicide.

That is, if it is suicide to begin with.

When Sunset Shimmer turned into a demon and was purified by the Elements of Harmony, the evil in her was not destroyed. Like Midnight Sparkle, it became an entity of its own and torments her in her nightmares, waiting for an opportunity to control her again.

Because, if the villain of Shadow Play is the Pony of Shadows, that means she's Nightmare Moon separate from Luna, and if Nightmare Moon and Midnight Sparkle became separate entities from the characters they were once one and the same with, why not her? Sunset had the darkest side BEFORE her transformation, so she had the most evil to exorcise. There was no sign of her after Sunset was purified so unless further evidence comes up I'll say she ended up like Midnight Sparkle.

In Canterlot High, nothing seems to stay normal. Magic makes a day somewhat dangerous yet adventurous for Twilight Sparkle and her friends.

Twilight's crown has been stolen, and the thief has escaped through a mirror to another world. Journeying through, Twilight meets familiar faces in this new world. As well as the counterparts of the Elements of Heroism that are dating her friends. However, a key face is missing from their number. Where is Burst Stream?

In the aftermath of the Fall Formal, Sunset Shimmer has fallen. Her power in Canterlot High is gone, and she's been exposed for the monster that she is. With nowhere else to go and nothing she can do, she retreats to where she's hidden herself since arriving in the human world, a realm that links Canterlot High and Equestria. But she isn't the only one to know about this realm, on either side, and perhaps with a little help from her new friends and her old mentor, she can find it in her to rise again.
