Sunset Shimmer is no spring chicken, that much is for sure. Her best days are a long, long way behind her. Content to live in the human world without settling into any sordid romances, she set her scientific mind to good use, and pursued a career that left the world in a better state than it was when she first arrived. A lifetime ago. But nobody, not even an equine-turned-human, is immune to the passage of time. And as an elderly Sunset settles down to enjoy a quiet evening on the porch of her small cottage, an old friend pays one last visit.

You're not crying. I'm crying :fluttercry:.

So much emotion here. :applecry:

You've done excellent, Sunset Shimmer.

You managed to overcome your past and built a better future for yourself and for the people who were your friends and over time became your family. The sun will set on the horizon, but your memory will last for years to come.

Here, as death makes their approach like an old friend, Sunset Shimmer enjoys her final moments with no regrets.

No goodbyes, only good memories.

Oh goodie more depression. And another reminder what a crappy deal Twilight got. Then again based on the writing I imagine Sunset is likely over a century old. How sad is that she outlived everyone from Canterlot High, even the people younger than her.

Sad but she'll see them again

This makes me miss EQG. They should’ve gotten an ending.

Ouch, this was a short and sweet little tale.

Sunset professing that she wanted to die in her adopted homeland made me tear up a little.

:applecry:

Thanks for writing this.

You have reached an age that is impressive for a being in this human world, but your Equestrian magic will no longer sustain it.

My take is that Sunset's ties to Equestria is what has kept her alive this long.

Not really that shocking. Sunset spent maybe 20 something years in Equestria while here she likely spent close to if not 90 + years. She has more memories in this world, made lasting friendships, has people she cares about living there and made a life for herself there. It's kind of like moving away from your hometown and living most of your life in another state or country.

Sure the place you left has sentimental value, but it's not home anymore.

Same here, it should have been given a proper ending.

This is a sad story but the fact of the matter is not even Celestia, Luna, Cadence, Flurry Heart and Twilight are immune to time no matter what alot of bronies think or say.

Its not all bad as while Twilight is long lived she is not immortal so she will join Sunset at some point

Actually the notion that Twilight gained immortality is kind of a main plot point here. Apologies if it doesn't subscribe to what you view as canon, but it's always struck me as a reasonable interpretation. So canon or headcanon, this story is as much about Twilight's goodbye to a mortal friend, as it is Sunset's acceptance of her own mortality.

I'm not crying. You're crying! :fluttershyouch:

I know this story is about Sunset, but to think that Twilight has probably done this with every single one of her friends at this point. Everyone is gone, and she's just, still there.

Did she at least do this with all of her Canterlot High friends? Doesn't feel right if she only did this in the human world for Sunset.

That much is for the reader to decide.

This is a very good one-shot.

Nope. Nooope. Nooooo, not gonna do it. You can't make me..! Nope no--ponyfeathers, I'm crying. :fluttershyouch: Such a wonderful one shot

It's interesting that Twilight most likely experienced the death of her pony friends too at this point... was she even able to look their human equivalents in the eyes after that???

Honestly I find it fun to think that Sunset is the only person from the human world that she actually brought herself to visit and maybe the reason why Twilight wanted her back in Equestria is because she didn't want to visit her grave and risk seeing those whose she couldn't bring herself to support in their final moments. :ajsleepy:

Short, simple, sad. Well done indeed. Also, the title made me think of My Way, which fits Sunset pretty well.
