This was not how things were supposed to go for Sunset Shimmer. Thanks to Pinkie Pie and her crew of interlopers, instead of returning to Equestria at the head of a conquering army, she was now serving time in the Ft. Featherworth Prison, with little prospect of any sort of parole thanks to her reputation. However, as far down as she is, she is most definitely not out: just before their return to Equestria, Pinkie and her friends let slip just enough information while she was in earshot to allow her to start forming a plan.

And Sunset Shimmer is never more dangerous than when she has a plan.

This story is a sequel to Princess Flurry Heart Versus the Mud Monsters

The Crystal Cotillion. Hobnobbing aristocrats, snooty nobles, and the upper crust of the upper crust. This strange and unfamiliar battlefield is where Flurry Heart finds herself fighting a war that she doesn't understand. Thankfully, she is not alone and there are allies who will come to her aid.

A crazed Vizard, Professor Egghead, and a perverted earth pony filly: these three are her only hope, her only chance at being free. Her enemies are many, including most of the aristocrats in attendance (whose views on society are one-thousand years out of date) and her younger sister, bratty little Princess Goody Fourshoes.

Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, sole ruler of the well-renowned Crystal Empire, grows increasingly weary from the burdens of taking care of a traditional kingdom alone. Though beloved and adored by her subjects, as she thought the world of them in turn, Cadence is beginning to tire out from the hardships of royalty.

An old friend of the family - Well, moreso a friend to her and bane to her aunt's existence - visits the Empire before the next Crystal Fair. And, upon seeing Cadence tiring herself out, sees to it the Princess of Love would never have to exhaust herself pointlessly again, harboring his own true feelings regarding the alicorn.

With all her new princess obligations, Twilight needs the support of her assistants more than ever. But since she started spending more time in Canterlot, Owlowiscious has seemed awfully distracted by something. Maybe Luna can help clear up why.

When you're the immortal ruler of an entire kingdom, the most important quality to possess is a passion for your work. No princess can rule her nation if she can't find it in herself to give her best effort every day and night. Luna knows this better than anypony, and puts her whole heart into everything she does.

But passion, unless tempered by restraint, has a way of biting one in the flank.

There are many different kinds of immortality. Some achieve immortality through great deeds of heroism. Some do it by discovering a spell custom-made to kick Death in the teeth. There are a select few who are immortal simply because they consistently avoid dying.

But perhaps the rarest breed of immortal is the one who escapes death by dying so suddenly that they come back to life.

The phoenix is one such immortal, and Philomena is one such firebird. But for all the time that she spends in the company of alicorns, Philomena rarely thinks of herself as immortal or ageless. When one defines the passage of time by one's death, immortality can be a difficult label to wear.

But life has a way of reminding us of our labels. Sometimes it uses traumatic events. Sometimes it takes the form of a blessing nobody else can enjoy. And once in a very rare while, life makes us fall in love with somebody we can never stay with.

'Life must endure. No matter the cost' Such is the mission of The Facility. Forever keeping the seeds of life tucked safely away, forever preserved.

So the creators thought. But sometimes, the worst happens.

Faced with the failure of its purpose, the automated systems find themselves without guidance. Everything is dead, and the Gates have not found the answer. Their purpose will fail, and nothing they can do will stop or slow it.

And the last chance in an AI. A true AI. One that thinks on its own. One that chooses not by program, but by soul. Broken from its hibernation, allowed control, the automation gives the last hope of life to it.

The AI is the only thing that might be able to save the cause. The last thing that can save the last seeds of life. It can find a path where others would not.

But will the path chosen be reflective of the mission? Or perhaps it will work to escape a dying facility, and use everything it has to break free.

One last, desperate chance. A gamble on an AI that was once called, 'insane'. The seeds of life are in danger, everything is in jeopardy.

Can anything be done? Can Twilight save a dying facility? Or will the AI use her to escape, and leave them all to die?

Spike carries each of the most important ponies in his life home after a long day.
