I, I have nothing to say.....
Except maybe playing Winter Contingency from Halo Reach in the background?
I hope James win this war.
I have no words.
Is this what a cliffhanger feels like?
If so, it sucks.
The fact that I have to wait, not the story.
This is best fanfic, and boy have I read a lot.
This whole time, the main thing I was reminded of is when you declare total war on a pacifist empire in Stellaris, and their only response is "But... Why?"
So this is the setup to the next big thing. I've dug through enough of the extra material for this story that I've known the Last Emperor of Humanity was the next bad guy for quite some time, but finally we have some context for how that is going to go down. There's finally some history on that guy and what happened back then in general, including an answer to pretty much two of the longest running mysteries in this whole story. Human-pony relations were illegal due to the populace's prejudice against the surviving human population, and the Princesses are reintroducing them because they feel bad for letting the whole species go extinct for a mistake not all of them were even on board with, and they remember how good of a people they were before Discord sunk his claws into just the wrong person.
Now, James is getting a whole lot of emotions going through him he probably hasn't ever dealt with before. With Nightmare Moon, he fought her to try and save her from herself, knowing full well that even if she won life would go on, and with Discord, he wasn't actually fighting anything up until he was completely consumed with grief.
This time though, he's truly getting a taste of understanding for why good men so often go to war. When everything you love is placed under very real existential threat and you know you have the power to help stop it, you're going to answer that call to arms no matter how much it's against your nature, because it's the right thing to do. To go to war and defend his adopted homeland is to stay as true to his element as he can in this situation. That's part of why wars can get do cataclysmicly big in the first place, when both sides of the conflict are rank and file filled with innocent people who believe they are doing the right thing, the will to keep fighting can go on for far longer than it should have.
Now the big question is how the Mane 6 will react. They of course made a pact with each other 2 arcs ago that whatever big crisis happens next, they will not let him get involved in it. They just broke it again without even realizing it. I don't doubt for a minute that each one of them will join the fray as soon as they catch wind of this and the danger he's in, and that's not just because Rainbow's on the cover art.
finally some action.
Ok don't get me wrong but I was just wondering why The Lost Element had gotten an update when there is already a sequel? I'm not complaining, partially because I'm not done with what had already been written in the first place but that's besides the point. It just struck me as....odd. Yeah that sounds right.

I got what I could get done ahead of schedule without spoilers as a means to set the groundwork when inspiration was fresh. It’s on hiatus for a reason.

Oh I just saw the word Sequel and was just like "Pinkie did what with how many cupcakes?" It was really bizarre bc I found myself repeating the ubiquitous phrase EVERYpony eventually learns: "Don't question the pink one, don't question the pink one,,,," and I just hoped it was a prank by said pink one.
And I'm still not convinced it isn't.......
Well, I say that I am long overdue to review one of your chapters. No time like the present, right? Although, it's rather short compared to my other reviews in the past due to the length of the chapter; no offense. ✌ It also doesn't help that I haven't written a review in a while.
Anyway....moving on......
I always find moments where the characters truly remind you of who they are in the first place to be touching. In this chapter, it was Pinkie Pie doing one of the things she does best. It's interesting; on his first day on the job, James tweaked one of Pinkie's recipes, and now, she has done the same to one of his. That was a nice touch.
The same can be said for the 'new editions' in the Canterlot Castle throne room.
I suspected that more humans would be involved in this new Volume, but I wasn't sure how they would come about. Well, you certainly answered that here, but I never would've guessed that the last Human Emperor had both escaped his banishment and survived for more than one-thousand years. It would also make sense that the Royal Sisters would want to tell James first. They truly seem worried about what is going to happen.
Finally, we hear the full story about what happened to Equestria's human population and the Element of Humanity, and why James is present in Equestria to begin with. From what I can see, it seems that Discord did not use his magic on the Emperor, but merely his words of temptation alone. Even without magic, words can be powerful, however they are used, and this is coming from someone who has seen "Once Upon a Time."
So, in your story's continuity, you have set up Megan as the Emeror's daughter?! I did not see that coming! Just like in Generation One, she was able to help the ponies stand their ground against the oncoming danger, barely lifting a finger in the process. Still, I can only imagine the kind of might she had within herself to keep so many on right path. She truly did have a strong will.
It is a pity that, even amongst our own kind, some still believe that they are superior than everyone else, but for the ponies who had been captured, it was far worse. And Megan....she was the last former human of Equestira and the last to carry the Element of Humanity. When she left, it vanished with her spirit.
We also received an explanation to that human/pony relationship law back in Chapter 7, "Risks of Exotic Romance."
Still, questions remain; how did the Emperor resist Starswirl the Bearded's spell and the Elements of Harmony and how is he still around? I wonder if it is anything akin to what Lord Voldemort had to do to survive after the magic Harry Potter possessed caused him to loose his power the first time.
I can understand how Princess Celestia would be so hesitant to send her "little ponies" out to fight, and James' determination to save them, even going so far as to leave immediately before loosing his will to do so. If the ponies are unwilling to fight, he is the first to step forward. How noble. Still, I think it was carless of how James just rushed out with nothing but his armor and weapons.
Something else that I did not expect was for Princess Celestia to attempt placing James under house arrest by force. I can understand Shining Armor's confusion though, as well as that of the Royal Guard. Princess Celestia really is terrified for her "sunshine," and despite James feeling unnerved, he is also determined that he will pull through.
Still, at the same time, his family and friends are bound to find out what is happening...….eventually.
How could Ponies be indifferent to the Elements purging the humans from Equestria? How could they stand by and let that happen?
What about the civilians in those human territories? Normal people just living out their lives, and then they're just gone. They were storekeepers, bakers, farmers, tailors. They each had their own dreams, aspirations and desires.
All of those people had potential, and you robbed it from them.
The Elements severed mixed species families and the law the sisters implemented made it, so it could never happen again. Imagine it. Your human father, brothers, sons, mothers, sisters, daughters. All gone because some jewellery judged them to be evil.
Could you imagine how the ponies in those families would feel? It's like when Kurdish children were stolen away from the Iraqis just to keep them subdued. The Iraqi heads called it a security 'program'
Or what about the Khmer Rogue? The part where they knew about that after killing the people they perceived as counterrevolutionaries, they took their babies and smashed them against tress, so they couldn't grow up to get revenge.
Where's the consequences, Humanity?
Where's the grief?
Where's the sorrow?
Where's the anger?
Where's the reaction to such a drastic change? Because it seemed like ponies went 'oh well, guess my brother/father/sister/daughter were criminals' and went on with their day.
Then there's the Kirin's. Where was their reaction to the humans disappearing? With Kirin's displaying such love to humans, surely they would have a negative reaction to such an event?
Where's the spirit of the show you claim that this story possesses?
Where's the innocence?

Discussing that now would be going into spoilers I’m not comfortable in saying that is mere chapters away from being revealed. You’ll just have to read on and see.

That doesn't explain how James could be alright with it. Just like with the ponies, he was indifferent to it.
It was his own people, if the sisters were capable of doing this to them, they're surely capable of doing it to him

Again, give it time. He’ll get the chance for the full experience. I’m not spoiling anything here when we’re this close to the end.
I will not be discussing this further and will let the story speak for itself.
