At the bottom of Stable 10, the great generator that has kept its residents alive for centuries is beginning to fail. As solutions are sought within, one pegasus sets her sights on the very ponies who built - and possibly sabotaged - her home.

Fun fact, Shinodage was kind enough to give me the green light to use his Space Ponyos for the story. :)

Building up to what happens in Chapter 40 took a lot longer than I expected it to, and boy was it a hard scene to commit to. I originally came up with the idea back when I was writing the scenes at the Jet Stream Solar Array and I think it's safe to say it went through several dozen iterations before I settled on a firm series of events. Ginger's gradual experimentation with her newfound magic were ladder rungs I had planned out well in advance, because I knew how cheap it would feel for her to spontaneously "know" a Twilight Sparkle level spell. Having her practicing in the background, accidentally poofing a slaver a few hundred feet in the air, her first deliberate use of teleportation on Chops and subsequently dragging Roach and Julip along for the ride from the safehouse to Aurora's prison were all steps toward Ginger pushing Aurora away for that final sacrifice. I don't think I've ever done that much pre-work in a story before and holy crap did it feel good to see the end result!
Also yes! I couldn't just leave Discord to rot as a statue in old Canterlot. ;) He's too valuable a sounding board to be given a throwaway cameo or two. The story's starting to fold back toward its origins now, which means it's time to start revisiting some old friends including Best Wasteland Bird!

^_^ Punishing yes, but not without reason or purpose. I think I've said it once before, but I won't be reducing Aurora to a quadriplegic alcoholic at least! I'm all for writing dark moments but holy crap we're not going anywhere near the levels of Project Horizons.
YAY!!!! another update!!!!
imma read this one tonight while cozy in my nest!!!
Comfy chapter.
Here I am awaiting the gutpunch once Roach and Julip learn the news.
Loving that this is still getting updates. Also how many chapters are left
What a wonderful weekend treat to wake up to! So many threads poised to finally weave together for the climax; very thrilling.
Also totally not already thinking about the extended aftermath, with Aurora and Roach ghouling around the wasteland together for the next few centuries :P

Well they made for very entertaining addition and it was even better that they got to contribute quite significantly to the plot!
The slow burn of Primrose's eventual unraveling is frustrating to be honest. Watching her try to seal up all the myriad cracks in her narrative with fear and blood is painful, like watching a chess game where the outcome's long been decided but she just has to make as many moves and take as many pieces as she can before the eventual checkmate. For a mare with a rook tattooed to her ass it's surprising she can't recognize when it's time to lay down your king.
It's amazing the veneer of society she's managed to pull around herself like a cloak over the last few centuries is actually protecting her from the wasteland justice she's so ready to dispense. Her eventual downfall is going to come too late to be satisfying and more than likely in a form that's better than she deserves. Every metaphorical twitch and spasm just feels like salt in a wound that's already killed the victim.
I guess it's necessary, and certainly in character, but if you'll excuse the pun it just feels like beating a dead horse. I'm still definitely a fan of the story, but her contributions to it at this point aren't doing much more than pulling a few sighs from me. I'm barely holding myself back from just skimming them entirely.
All that aside, keep up the good work. This has been a great reimagining of the setting full of great characterization and a, while definitely convoluted, cohesive and navigable narrative. Can't remember if this is my first comment on the story, but if it is I want to end on the note that it's been a great read overall so far.
Elbow, I yet again, cannot state how much I love this story. This is the biggest chapter yet. It's super comfy, love the dynamic between Aurora and Dis. Fiona is hilarious. Coronado seems like a great guy, didn't do anything bad even. Yet. Can't wait for their eventual meeting.

Well, as I see it, she's running on the fumes of her fumes, not sleeping for a ludicrous amount of time, and absolutely high on drugs. She just wants to fix a problem that is in front of her, rather than thinking it through and acting as needed.
Whole chapter I was waiting about Rainbow Dash existance will be introduced to Discord, but anyway it was cozy chapter to listen though ^_^
This update was awesome!!
And yay!!!!! More Fiona !!!
And caught up, again! PM already send with error spotted, as requested, but I thought I'd comment as well to say that I'm still quite enjoying the story and thank you for writing again. :)
Congratulations on an incredible (whaaat) milestone. Oh my goodness it's over nine thousand! Hundred!
I wish for Earth to invent holodecks soon but this is the next best thing. Keep traumatizing us or whatever youngsters call it these days, with more, please!
Real recognizes Real.
LMAO.
I'm happy to be getting more info on Eshe here. It's a little bittersweet in how late it is, especially knowing all the more we're learning. It feels like we've barely passed the halfway mark, but it also feels like it's been going long enough to end soon.
Prim is losing her grip.
Aurora is moving forward.
Tandy has a new friend.
I have all these tears
I understand that the Balefire sapped him of magic but I was kinda hoping he'd still have SOME of it, enough to keep living a long time at least
Awwww this is nice <3
LOL
Anyone who's tried it knows tho that Vaseline is a terrible lubricant (at least for the butt [heh] of the joke)
YASS APPRENTICE DISCORD
I might come across details that remind me before you get a chance to see this but who's clover, again?
I gotta say, this aspect of the story, the dream world and how it allows for perfect recall and sharing of information over long distances is hands down the best plot device I've seen in a story. It's SO useful and allows for so much creativity without it feeling like "cheating"
Yessssssssss
Primrose is getting mad silly with her lack of sleep
