Going to be ntresting, seeing what kind of hybrids turn up from Dragon, Griffin cross, given its possible to get a Kirin from a Dragon, Hippogriff cross?
I would think its not so much the variable power in the drive motor thats the problem, its the power electronics would be more tuned for efficiency at cruise, and so drop well out of band otherwise, and that cooling rating would only be temporarily than continous or even hourly?
Big base power stations are shut down annualy for primary maintenance, and Drax can keep going because its effectively two independant primary units joined by a common feed system and exhaust? Unless the feed etc needs maintenance?

Try putting a sub in drydock. I've done it twice. Feels strange to walk around the ship in the dock, even stranger to look out where the shaft used to be and see daylight on the far end. I can't say anything about the procedures, though- that wasn't my job at all. Venting and filling seawater systems after refilling the dock, yes. Not fun.

Considering I'm of the D&D school of thought where dragons can bone pretty much anything... yes. Not all hybrids lead back to pre-existing species (like pony + griffon = hippo; or pony + dragon = kirin), but they're absolutely viable.
The thing with commercial marine propulsion, is that it's optimized to run at a certain rpm for weeks on end. That ain't a problem with pitch control since you technically don't touch the engine's throttle. If you don't have that, the autopilot may start altering rpm on gear that's not meant for quick, drastic changes.
For one that's a lot worse for the machinery in terms of wear and tear.
For second it may even bump an alarm, tear the engine out of auto-control at the worst of times, and severely annoy the engineering team when they have to do a hard reset on the computer.
Yeah, good luck getting the truth when both parties involved hate each other's guts, and good luck with throwing holy water at an elephant-sized manticore.

I can imagine just maintaining core temperature without being submerged isn't the easiest thing. Or did you just SCRAM it and plug in shore power?

Rather hard to connect to shore power some miles offshore. No, what can be done is to use the ship's battery through the motor-generators to maintain power to do a latch and snatch on the control rods and get them back up to add heat before the system cools down too much to do on battery power only. Normally, you could come up, stick the snorkel mast out and use the diesel generator to carry electrical loads, but that's hard to do farther down then the exhaust mast sticks up.
Rereading the question, I think what you mean is drydocking. In that case the reactor would already be shut down and cooled down. I don't remember if we used the drydock, but I know shore power lines are the first things rigged over!
The closest to dry docking procedures I’ve been is when I was in the US Navy onboard USS Nimitz CVN-68 for RCOH (Reactor Complex Overhaul) at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA in April 1998. The Nimitz was in dry dock sitting on a series of massive keel blocks in three rows. Of course, as soon as that was completed, every yardbird went on strike for three weeks, effectively holding the USN hostage.
