Whoops, I doubt that was intentional. And if Starswirl wasn't galivanting around in foreign countries all this time he might have heard of Twilight's legendary freak-out.
This promises to be intresting. The escape from the island could go either way in the telling, but given the mention by the shaman, Im going to call the hippogriff, Helen. And I really hope one of the guys mentions that when they get the radio. Otherwise the ship is going to be Troy.
I wonder if the Captain, on getting back after his colli flower, is going to have another very good look through the crew roster, species list and general behaviour patterns, so as to set up systems and methods for handling dedicated and loose monogamous, multiples and variable creche groupings to do best to avoid and mitigate biasing and discrimination etc?
Im still thinking it might be possible in Broceliande to have at least protected or formed trail passages in places, through wicker work and rootweave, letting the growth build up over the canopy, effectively making them like hedgerow tunnels? Im wondering just what kind of Belief Item is in that Abbey, beyond basic cross etc, that the locals or general venerated so much that its effect has lasted so long? Then makes me think, if this is a small item in the middle of a forest, just what does the Vatican look like, and other such Primary gigapopulation beleif sites?
My first thought of the female unicorns appearence, was, Legendary Site?.. looks like classic unicorn, Amalthea? but then the colouring, Faust?
As for the male unicorn, I took one look, grey fur, bright blue eyes, built like a tank. Husky/Wolf Were.
As for Mr Stabby. He looks like he prefers to get the point accross. Or through.
Starlight, on Magic Earth, with Orkz belief power assist? Why couldnt they return to Equestria by using Merlin/Starswirls link as the book, mirror equivalent? Or is that not available at this time because noones proposed it and so dont beleive its possible?
Excaliber as The Subtle Knife. Could be very intresting.
Starlight using her B.ass Canon.
Course, I still beleive she got the idea from Vinyl Scratch.
Vinyls Bass Cannon.
As for a given location not wanting to sue advanced technology, instead prefering medaevil levels of stuff etc? Spark transmitters and recievers can be picked up in aincient greece and egypt if youre careful. Romans had heliograph comms, which is just low density optical, and the Temple hydraulics were essentially a Savery class steam engine, just not running hot enough to actually boil the water. Still was hot air atmospheric engine.
Lots of modern knowledge can help make old things better with only very small alterations. Works in reverse as well. Modern stapled roof trusses are a lot less self stable and strong than kingpost trusses, and you have to look carefully to see just why the kingpost design works so well. It can be demostrated with the old drafting, childs toy, the Pantograph, and two pieces of string. But that seems to be hard to find these days?

Rumor has it, the ensuing checklist held so many bullet points it could hit the ground if opened from the top of Cloudsdale. Paper stocks went up by 10% on that fateful day.

Honestly I can't say I would have a perfect answer to the issue and I wouldn't expect a Captain to come up with one out of the blue. Managing crews with varied nationalities is hard enough as is, managing them when they turn into species with wildly differing mating habits and social tendencies is another entirely. Moreso if you account for the fact it's human minds that have been put in the bodies of such creatures, and most of them still likely think very much like humans. That in and of itself is a danger too.
Now... strictly monogamous species with lifelong mating... that's probs the easiest to manage. Just make sure two mates are on the same ship or at least in the same fleet and you should be good. Give them quarters to share, and morale should follow. The issue would be kids and pregnancies... since merchant vessels remain an hazardous industrial environment and keeping a tight eye on a kid/cub/filly/whatev is a task that may very well need more than just the parents.
Well... there's the difference: sky carriages don't require much infrastructure, hedgerow tunnels... quite the contrary. I guess you could contemplate using waystones/enchanted menhirs to light up paths and keep the overgrowth in check and nobody would bat an eye at that, but doesn't that still mean more work? Lone individuals and patrols can still use game trails to travel, but making passages wide enough for carriages to transport cargo... dunno, just feels more sensible to do it by air.
Now... I know I'm not gonna make a lot of friends with that kind of statement, but I generally don't want to give Christianity or other modern religions belief power in this setting. The magic mentioned by Starswirl is meant to refer to non-Christian artifacts the abbey would have seized a long time ago and kept locked in a reliquary. Historically, Christianism appropriated and 'adapted' a lot of folk tales and I'd have that carry over to, say, nordic and celtic artifacts (to avoid calling them relics). So of course the Vatican would have an ungodly amount of such stuff stored in its vaults... just nothing christian.
Meta-wise... I'm just really touchy about using modern religions, particularly the Abrahamic ones. The belief of one omnipotent and omniscient god, set into a system where divinities gain power in relation to their number of followers... the two just don't seem to fit together, or would demand such a huge follower base it wouldn't even be possible. Pair that with the fact Christianity played its part in the 'Disenchantment' and demystification of the world that led to magic disappearing (by stamping out belief in magic and spreading missionaries across the planet), and giving it some kind of power just doesn't seem to fit the setting.
Other modern, non-Abrahamic religions vary in how they could fit.
Shinto and Hinduism for instance? Fits rather well.
Buddhism and Taoism? Eh... not saying it's impossible to interpret them with that system, but it ain't easy.
Overall though, most places have ancient beliefs to dig into and see pop back up. Celtic, Nordic, Assyrian, Aztec...
Plus writing about it is a bit boring compared to the kind of research I go through for a reemergence of ancient beliefs.
Guess it's long enough for this week, that was a bit of a rant, so I'm gonna stop before I write a novel inside the comment section.
Starlight Glimmer and Trixie Lulamoon. Stuck on Earth.
