[sarcasm mode] Yay. Death by Power Point. [/sarcasm mode]
The modern US Military has perfected this. So many harassment classes, fraternization classes, other classes...
Flexible pitch propellers. Wish I had that on the subs. Now, they have something called a pump-jet, which I can barely comprehend.
Isnt there a Powerpoint presentation on how to create Powerpoint presentations?
Especially when the information presented is made out of date just by the presence of those being presented to?
How long before someone gets some reinforcing mesh and an industrial air mover from a forge to make a Fun Machine?
Im wondering how large those 1 Megawatt 1250 HP diesel electric generators are, compared to the diesel electric generators used on HS 120 traction locomotives from the 1970s and theres a few of them in varous museums, as well as all the other designes around? One guy even had a 0-6-0 Deisel electric shunting engine as a display outside his store.
Wierdest must be the Magnus sails. think of the cylindrical mast of a power wind turbine sticking out the deck of a ship, without anything at the top, and itself spun axially. As the wind blows past it, it makes the airflow deflect, giving side thrust. The small test ship placed a Savonius axial rotor on the top to spin its design, though I dont know the actual Magnus effect of a Savonius itself.
The one I really want to see though is where a ducted rotor with permanent magnet annulus floats inside a sealed tube wall with the drive coils inside the ship on the outside of the duct. Then that propulsion water can be ejected through drive ports or turrets etc for drive, manouver etc? Then again, I was hoping for Hubless Turbines, given Strangford Loch designs? Also biased through Harrier vector thrust and others.
If you really want to blow Equestrian minds, show them descriptions diagram and texts of Emulation Scripts and home made computers that are still capable of running Powerpoint equivalents. CRTs are still a continuation of Crookes tubes, alchemists vaccuum distilation flasks. Organic circuitry takes Zecora to find the right compounds? Fungi apparently pump electrons between plants, okus a bunch of other ultra tech stuff can be found in magical plants etc might make flatscreens easier in Equestria?
Hippogriffs are going to be kept on a restricted diet? Or will normal rationing take care of that, like having to apply for porking rations? the need for gems means a return to deBeers for the dragons, till they can sort something else out, like an industrial diamond maker for the dust etc?
sure hope the Equestrians are taking notes on the engine room.
a grate chapter and Andy just sounds so cute,..

Can't say much about railway engines, not really my turf to talk about. As for the 1MW generators on the other hand, Wärtsilä also produces the 6-cylinder Warsila 20 Genset. Going by their data sheets, this variant weighs 16.8 tons at 5.3m in length, producing 1.055MW (@60Hz) of power at 900rpm.
As for the rotor and water jet propulsion, Flettner rotors have been fitted to one roro vessel by the time of the Event apparently... but they're really just used to improve fuel efficiency, not as standalone propulsion. As for the water jet, never seen them used on pure cargo ships. High Speed Crafts and military ships like corvettes? Sure, but a 30.000 tons cargo vessel, that I have yet to see.
Doubt rationing would be required to prevent unwanted ovulation. Peeps eat a lot when at sea, but the daily average is what sets the bar, meaning a hippogriff mare (or hen? never too sure with chimeras) would have to have pretty bad nutritious habits to skew it to the point where she would trigger her estrus by accident. I'd be more interested in cultural repercussions this would have on them. Dinner dates would be looked at in a completely different light in hippogriff culture.
As for the dragons, they don't really need the gems to survive. What they need them for in their diet is scale hardness and growth (at a young age). I'd wager the teenaged dragons on the crew fall somewhere between protection level IIA and II due to their current lack of gems (as in: they can sustain 9x19mm and .45ACP, but not .357 magnum), but they can live for months without ingesting any gem.

I must confess to submitting ratings to such a fate ever since I made it to Officer... but only the one time. I suffered through it with the navy in basic, so I felt obligated to 'pass on the torch', so to speak (even though they're merchants, and yes, it's petty).
>Have them work all day grinding away rusty paint in cold weather
>Wait until after dinner to give the briefing
>Dim the lights, crank up the heating
>Proceed to start an hour-long briefing on various boundary cooling techniques (with quizz at the end, so stay awake) with a Powerpoint I knowingly designed to be shitty
And of course...
>Have the bosun (closest approximation to a CSM merchants have by my reckoning) stay in the back of the room
Admittedly, that's the exact same thing I had to endure with a particular CBRN instructor back in the navy.
