*whistles* Yeah, I never thought of that, either. Nuclear missiles DO need maintenance. The odds of a nuclear detonation are VERY slim, but, something like a dirty bomb, contaminating the landscape for a long distance around the storage area, that is definitely possible. Best make sure you have some rad counters available, just in case. You can't see zoomies, but they can do a real number on you. I ought to know.
Very thought- provoking chapter. Well-done, as usual. How DO you do it?
Leylines must be pretty wide. If the earliest temperature variations suggesting civilisation attempts in the previous interglacial are anywhere correct, any nodes then would have moved a mile or so due to continental drift?
I was hoping HPI could drop MIRV through a monster summons, jsut to make the guy on the other end wary, if not ashen.
Two Sirens are going to bring a Leviathan down the North channel and theyre going to be lucky if the 40mm with HEAT, HEX can hurt it?

Research would be one thing. I try to always do at least some measure of research in topics this story broaches regardless of how familiar I think I am with them. Any movement the characters make is charted, I check out satellite pictures, ground pictures when possible, find data sheets on the tech they use (I even downloaded the manufacturer's manual to Amandine's main engine), and keep track of what goes on where with my spreadsheets. I even keep tabs on prevalent weather in the ports they stop at. That's all thanks to the PaP-verse happening on Earth, lots of content to draw from, and even more topics that have been discussed on the PaP forum.
That's not to say the story doesn't have its weaknesses. God knows I often deplore the fact my characters feel like cardboard cutouts at times. Much as I work on the technical aspects, people are one point where I'm certain the story stumbles.
And if you were asking about the nukes... To be honest I was merrily writing the part about Civ V when I went: " Shit, what about the nukes?!. Funny we'd worry more about the reactors than the warheads. Didn't even find anything about them on the forum.

See, here's one thing I think I can broach upon without spoiling the story too much. See, in this story, competent as they are, the HPI is still vastly less powerful than the OG story's HPI. They were pretty much a offshoot space agency turned into a science project by the UN Security Council. And that's precisely that affiliation to the UN that would ensure nobody would have ever entrusted any nuke upon them. The sole idea would have been vetoed into oblivion.
Not saying they haven't kept tabs on where the nukes were, but as of this chapter they still pretty much have their initial issue of not being able to operate out of their facilities, what with the shitty shielding tech. So yeah, no dice on them getting Ghandi's Vessel of Peace.
So I did some research in the CV90's weapon system. Not saying my word is gospel, but among the ammo types I found the Swedes used, I found those:
FYI, the 40mm L/70 they use doesn't seem to be able to use the ammo of the more common (but older) L/60 variant. That being said, I seriously doubt even the biggest of zeebeest would have armor thick enough to shrug off 150mm of penetration. You know, square cube law is a bitch.
nukes will be the end it is only a matter of time.
Cloudwalk that is going to be a fun lesson to see.
