In one way its a pity the ship is a new design, thats tuned for one particular fuel type due to working ranges, because a tougher, more variable fuel resiliant engine wouldve cost much more, but old tech paper would show its possible to run certain old ship diesels on coal slurry. As long as its top quality anthracite so the silica content doesnt wear the engine out eytc.

Now I'm not saying you can pump liquefied coal inside a marine engine, but they do allow operators to alternate between heavy fuel oil (HFO) and marine diesel oil (MDO) with little to no difference in engine efficiency; the major difference being in working temperatures (which tends to make MDO a better choice in ports/low draught areas to avoid overheating). The main reason behind using HFO nowadays, and after the Event too (I suspect) would be that it's a part of the distillation process that's not really used anywhere else beside marine engines. This means that, for fuel produced after the Event, they can leave most of the diesel to be used by land vehicles and pure electricity generators. Granted they still need a fair bit of diesel, but you go from filling 3000 tons worth of diesel to 500 tons per ship if you use HFO as the main power source.

Source leads to an encyclopedia of marine tech, with a company that produces engines that can even run on both LNG and MDO/HFO without retrofits. That's not the case for M/V Amandine but eh, the tech is there.

What would I ask for, if I was an Amandine crew member?

2. One Nuclear-Biological-Chemical (NBC) Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle. While the threat from nuclear power plants is over, there are many chemical refineries and factories that create or make use of many toxic chemicals. If these refineries and/or factories burn or leak, those could create deadly clouds, such as what happened in Superior, Wisconsin.

Also, trains with big tank cars loaded with toxic chemicals such as benzene could reappear and then derail, as what happen in Superior, Wisconsin many years ago.
