5890228 Steven Universe is about this boy named Steven, who happens to have a gem embedded in his navel. Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl help Steven learn how to use his new powers. Steven is half gem, thanks to his mother, Rose Quartz, who fell in love with Steven's father and ended up sacrificing herself to allow Steven to have life. Steven hangs out with Rose Quartz's proteges, Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl.
Steven's gem powers are focused on shield and bubble barriers, which are powered by the need to protect others. This stems from his mother Rose's maternal love. Steven's friend is Connie, a girl he likes from his school.
Garnet, the stoic team leader, has her gems, garnets, in the palms of her hands. She can create gauntlets as her weapon. She usually helps Steven train in how to use his gem powers.
Amethyst is the shape-shifter/prankster of the team and is purple, like her gem, which is found in her chest. Amethyst wields a whip when she is ready for battle.
Pearl is the den mother and graceful warrior of the team. Her pearl gem is embedded in her forehead and she often defers to Garnet when it comes to battle strategies. They live with Steven at Beach City, and serve as Steven's protectors. Pearl is often the voice of reason among her sisters concerning Steven's training.

All the gems can shape shift, even Steven though he has little control. Connie is a young girl Steven has feelings for who returns them, though being young they don't admit or fully understand it. The gems are technically gendeless but the crystal gems identify as female, they are also Aliens though Amethyst was born on earth. Garnet's gems are a Ruby and a Sapphire, that is because there are 5 Crystal Gems. Rose Quartz, Pearl, Amethyst, Ruby and Sapphire. The gems have the power to fuse together to form more powerful entities and Ruby and Sapphire are so in sync mentally that their fusion, Garnet, is highly stable and the two don't feel "complete" when separated. Other fusions are Opal (Pearl and Amethyst) , Sugalite (Garnet and Amethyst), Alexandrite (Garnet, Pearl and Amythyst), and Stevonnie (Steven and Connie). Yellow Diamond(note white) is the leader of the Gem Home world, the home world considers the crystal gems to be rebels as in the distant past Homeworld controlled earth enslaving humanity and plundering it's resources to "grow" new gem warriors (Amethyst being a example of a "failure" who was abandoned and taken in by Rose), until Rose Quartz raised a rebel army of humans and like minded gems thousands of years ago.

I literally just got into Steven Universe yesterday, but I gotta say, this is turning out to be interesting.

Pearl's obsession with WHITE DIAMOND. Cute. That whole meta moment that show does was well recieved with the whole Garnet feeling insecure about a such a thing. And to care what Pearl would think over watching that show was a cute insight into how close she values her friends.
Good speech, Pearl, many brownie points for passing that meta moral there. Not that she eats human foods, that stuff feels weird and gross going through her system.

This chapter feels more in line with the both shows. Thought Twilight showed some poor judgement with Steven, but not something out of character mind you.. Steven also should have known better than to be a changeling among ponies, but again it's not unreasonable for his character that in the excitement of being able to pull off a stable shape shift that ponies might react badly to a changeling colt would slip his mind. Steven isn't unintelligent but his excitement often overrides his common sense. I am a little surprised the gems didn't become crystal ponies, it could have been a good cover for why they are culturally "weird" by equestrian standards, but their tribal choices suit them. Garent as a stolic earth pony, Amethyst an hyperactive pegasus and Pearl as a prim unicorn.
