Not bad.

I find it pretty unbelievable that someone so young is in Force Recon as I've read it takes 1.5-2 years of training...which by your character's age meant that he got into the training program for Force Recon straight out of Parris Island. Furthermore, he's an E-4, after two years? Then again, the character admits that what happened to him is unusual.

But I like the idea a lot.

Having the guy jump kick the door to breach is just silly and puts the fireteam at risk. Blast it/breach it/ram it/ halligan tool it. Flying dragon flaming baby kicking the door just ends up with a broken foot.

Beyond that, not bad.

It's nice. Although the drop kick to the door was much, a small demo charge would have worked better.

I'm just going to leave that here.

But in all seriousness, there is a reason I had 5 do it.

Well, I imagine that being recruited into a task force such as the ITTF also carries a promotion.

Well it's not bad I Favorited this cause i like this kind of stories. I hope The next chapter is good. good luck :ajsmug:

Kind of generic, the soldiers seem rather stereotypical. Hopefully that will change as the story progresses. You also use a lot of military jargon which might not be familiar to everyone who reads this.

I favorite because this story has some potential.

Has potential, but feels really CoD-y (read: civilian) to me. Also, I've never had anyone I served with in the US Army act like 5 did on the radio. That's just straight up unprofessional.

That was a joke during a training breach. It's an example of how not to breach a door. There is no reason for anyone to do something like that in a real combat situation, ever.

EDIT:

I've never heard of anything like that happening. Just passing training may boost your "promotion score" (every service has a different name for it, but they all are basically the same idea) a bit, so unless he was a Sierra Hotel Marine in Boot, he'd need a good year plus a deployment before he'd be anything worth thinking about putting into a SpecOps group.

Well, I'm a civilian so… yeah. I try to be as accurate as possible.

5 is supposed to be… not exactly sane. High functioning enough that no one ever says anything about it, but noticeable when he lapses. The reason for Dante being a Cpl. was me being extremely liberal with my artistic license.

I'm not sure how I fell about this story. "Not enough meat one the bone," you can say.

Kabar, believe me, man. I love your stories, and as someone who very sporadically updates I may have no leg to stand on, but maybe you should focus on the stories you already have first, man. You've released a lot of stories that are still updating and even a demigod would have a tough time writing at that pace.

As a civilian talking to a veteran, again, I may not have a whole lot of a leg to stand on, but the differences you pointed out seem rather minor in the long run. I mean, yes it's inaccurate, but it seems like it has a ways to go before being COD comparable. Until a personification of communism has a boxing match with Uncle Sam with Nuclear weapons being used as boxing gloves like some not so subtle political cartoon, then I think COD isn't too similar.

That's not CoD, that's just a cliché storyline. CoD is basically an unrealistic view of the military. All military action movies are like this (at least the ones I've seen, Band of Brothers is the only one I've seen that has the real life feel to it, Generation Kill is another but I haven't seen it yet). For example, you have a well trained Ranger jamming up the radio with unnecessary communication. That doesn't allow you to pass Basic, much less Ranger School. You have an international military taskforce doing the job of an international law enforcement taskforce (the military wouldn't be sent on these kinds of raids; these are criminals, not terrorists), being assigned to a SpecOps unit doesn't give you an automatic promotion (that still needs to be earned, getting an assignment is expected for you, not something noteworthy [for a promotions board at least], much less something that allows you to jump ranks [he got three promotions in two years... That just doesn't happen, he needs time in rank to get used to the new responsibilities] like the MC did) and you have a Boot being assigned to a SOCOM taskforce (after getting slot at a SpecOps School, which guys with five years combat experience have trouble getting).

There are a lot of things that are unrealistic about it. While I do understand that, as a civilian, you don't have the detailed knowledge an active duty member does, hence why I haven't trashed the story. I'm keeping an eye on it. It's got a good enough storyline that I'm willing to overlook a lot of the OCD details. I don't expect perfection, even from fellow service members. After all, real military life is boring. There is a reason why the sayings "Hurry up and wait!" and "Hours of boredom, moments of terror," exist. Garrison duty is basically standing around and guarding a post for X hours, training for the next *cough*last*cough* war, drilling with the stuff you already memorized, working out and regular recreational activities. This comic is a good example of what real military life is, in a more humorous style of course.

I understand what you are saying. I'm not actual military myself, but I have many friends and family in all five branches (yes, even the coasties) and like to research military topics in general. Due to that second hand knowledge, I can tell when stories have realism gaps also, and when it is really obvious that a writer either didn't care enough to research or knew the realistic facts but ditched them to make it more "badass", it easily becomes annoying, if not downright disrespectful.

That said, I don't think this story is like that. Sure, it has some pretty big holes in the authenticity, but it is still good even with said holes, and Kabar isn't purposefully abandoning research or fact just to make an entry of military fetish wank material like call of duty.

4137775
:facehoof: As I said, those points are mainly OCD details. While incorrect, they can be overlooked for the sake of a story.

4137780
Oh. Missed that part. :twilightoops: :twilightblush:

I apologize. It's been a long few days and I desperately need more sleep and less reading.

4137787
:rainbowlaugh: Nothing like a 90-hour day to make you realize how much you love sleep.

And don't worry about it. I've had more than my fair share of slip ups like that

4137804
Man, I hear you. I'm likely not getting any sleep soon either. That reminds me, I have an exam to get to.

I like it. Keep it going. Be sure to lengthen the chapters though.

4332709 75th Rangers are considered spec ops. He didn't say with regiment.

4487457 Force Recon and MARSOC are separate branches. Force Recon is exclusively under the USMC while MARSOC is the Marines contribution to SOCOM. Now back to the Rangers, out of the 4 combat regiments (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 75th) only the 75th and its 3 battalions are considered SF

4487542

No, Force Recon still falls under Marine Corps. MARSOC was created because of the bullshit reason that technically the Corps had no Special Forces because they had no contributions to SOCOM.

The Marine Corps can operate in a Special Forces role, but in order to be considered Special Forces, you have to be part of SOCOM.

4488048

They don't fall under MARSOC. Marines in MARSOC are called special operators, with Force Recon Marines just being Force Recon Marines.

Basically, what the Corps did was just make another version of Force Recon, but one that is officially recognized as Special forces.

Force Recon is Special Operations Capable, but what falls under MARSOC is the MSOT, or Marine Special Operations Team.

4488161

No, I'm fairly certain Force Recon still falls under basic Marine Command.

4488231

No, no.

Force Recon: Marine Corps
MSOT: MARSOC

4488277

Yes, I assume that's what they're being called now.

But like I said, the way Force Recon operates, they could be SF, but they aren't officially recognized as SF operators.

Are you going to update this, or is it dead?
I really liked this fic too.
