Once upon a time, Spike went for a walk.
While on his walk, he was judged by an ancient alicorn, lodged with griffons, parlayed with air pirates, charmed a maiden of a mystical race, and dealt with the scourges of hate, fear, and racism while deliberately drawing the armies of myriad nations to the brink of global war.
Once upon a time, Spike went for a walk, and did all of this so that he could keep a promise to the one that meant the most to him... Twilight Sparkle.
In the first of three books, Pillars of the Sun (Chapters 1-15), Spike is devastated by Twilight's fate and grows more and more despondent as he attempts to understand what has happened to his dearest friend. A gentle nudge from a pony he trusts sends him looking for answers. When that nudge becomes a push he unravels ancient secrets... and risks losing himself before his attempt to rescue Twilight can even begin.
Oh man, I can already tell this story is going to be epic!

In my opinion, that's some pretty terrible logic. The details of the episodes are somewhat hazy for me, but I thought one of the major points of the Crystal Empire was that Twilight couldn't do everything alone, no matter how capable she may be.
Anyways, I'm loving the rest of what I have read.

I had just completed a six-hour spell of the tedious busywork of re-points costing forty-one stasrship fleets and I was desparately looking for something to read while I had supper, something that would be easy reading (by which I mean, "not drive me to want to smack all the characters upside the head for being silly" like I am having a spate of at the moment...) Clearly, you also have a Pinkie sense of a sort, as you placed this up at exactly the right time to come to my rescue.
This sounds like it is going to be awesome; a big-huge-massive Descendant-Spike story (in which we finally might get some answers to all the tantalising hints you've been dropping!)
It's certainly off to the flying start I have come to expect from you.
Bonus points for using Sombra, even if as an indirect legacy. (To me Sombra always seemed the most ruthlessly efficient evil enemy, a pony after my own lack of heart.)
