The neighboring kingdom of Aurora lays to the north of Equestria has always been reclusive. Much like there Queen Eventide, even through there generations of isolationism the diarchy of Equestria has always tried to form relations to no avail.
Queen Eventide had always respectfully decline the many invitations sent by Celestia. Mandatory meeting of the kingdoms was always visited by a trusted representative, and dispatching hardly sincere apologies as she declined to attend the celebrations. Yet to the princesses surprise the queen accepted to attend this years Grand Galloping Gala, why now of all celebrations?
Eventide, the queen, is a unicorn. As was her husband, King Astrid, who has sadly passed. And she to will pass on one day. The royal pony sisters had always wondered why she had not chosen a heir to assend to the throne on the day of her passing. But they didn't know of her only child, her heir. In the Spirit Realm Master Celestia is meditating peacefully when she is attacked by a Spirit Warrior: a horned beast named Tirek who fought against Celestia five hundred years previously. The two battle, and Celestia learns that Tirek has increased his strength by stealing the Chi of every creature in the Spirit Realm, and only needs Celestia's to become strong enough to return to the mortal realm. Claiming victory, Tirek is nevertheless warned that Celestia was never Destined to defeat him, but that she has set someone else on that path. Meanwhile, in the Ponyville, Twilight and the Furious Five learn that Luna will no longer be responsible for overseeing their training: that responsibility now falls to Twilight.

Twilight Sparkle, former student of Princess Celestia and now the princess of Magic, decides to build a machine to allow ponies to do research on other planets and dimensions. But when activated, the Mirror released an acient spirit, locked away within the subconscious even before Celestia's rise to power. Having been able to watch the world change, he decides to trap Twilight in another Universe and change Equus's History to suit his needs.
Twilight, now lost in an unknown environment, must find a way home and fight for Equestria's freedom. But this is Earth, 1942, and things aren't going to be as easy or as kind as she would like to believe.

Set in between Season 3 and 4, the timeline will not suit all of the remaining seasons.

Nightmare Moon has returned. Princess Celestia lied and betrayed her star pupil, Twilight Sparkle, leaving her woefully unprepared to fight the Queen of the Night.

But when she fails, rather than disposing of her and the ponies that tried to help her, Nightmare Moon sees an opportunity and a necessity. Having been locked away for one thousand years, who better to help her solidify her rule and keep Equestria from collapsing, all while rubbing it in her sister's face, than her own betrayed pupil?

Twilight had never questioned the nature of the Tree of Harmony. To her at least, it stood as a sentinel, a silent guardian watching over Equestria and keeping disharmony at bay.

She soon starts to have questions and misgivings when she inadvertently witnesses the horrifying fate of hers and the rest of her friend's twisted doppelgängers. Did something happen to the Tree of Harmony, or was it always this way?

Twilight aims to resolve this mystery once and for all. Little does she realize that this mystery goes far deeper—the truth far more terrifying than she can imagine.

Will she be able to solve this nightmarish mystery with her sanity intact, or will she surrender and be lost to madness?

After some deliberation I chose to put a Crossover tag as the whole story uses many assets from several stories in the Cthulhu Mythos (most of them written by authors other than Lovecraft).

Twilight has long since accepted these rules, until one day when a mysterious stranger appears and promises to show her the biggest secret in Equestria.

When Twilight is given the opportunity to travel with Princess Celestia on what appears to be a regular dignitary’s trip to see the dragons, she’s ecstatic. After all, nopony has seen the dragon kingdom in over a hundred years.

But they are not alone on the journey; there are rumours being carried on the wind, hushed whispers of something stirring in the east...

Their presence reignites an ancient chain of events that will see Twilight racing for help in the darkest places on earth and the princess struggling to reconcile her role in the world, surrounded on all sides by enemies she thought defeated millennia ago.

The clock is ticking. Time is running out, and the sun has already begun to set...
