The two ponies I care for the most, my dear sister and most faithful student, have betrayed me. My most loyal guard says I'm just being paranoid, but what would he know that I don't also? I thought the nightmare was over, but now it's clear it never went away. In fact, it's only gotten stronger and more cunning, as evidenced by how it's turning all that I hold dear against me. Time may heal all wounds, but the scars and trauma left behind could change those affected in both expected and unexpected ways, and not always for the better. For some, time is enough, but for others, something more is needed. A distraction. Something to cling to when you feel there's nothing left. For the Princess of Equestria, that something was a mystery better left unsolved.
Fantastic cover art once again done by Mix-up!

Authors Notes: I appreciate viewer discretion and respecting of my opinions. People tried to convince me that immortality is a good thing here, but I am not a believer in that and never will be. To counter the comment that started that little debate, it's a fact that the highest age for suicide is people in their fifties. Some can overcome the pain of losing loved ones, others are overwhelmed by sadness.
How bad do things have to be to resort to something as dangerous as time travel?
For Twilight, the line is an apocalypse. A world of fear and despair forged by years of failures. Years where she got nowhere. She doesn't know what caused it, or how to stop it. She doesn't even know where to look.
None of that matters anymore, though.
She's out of time.
Here stands I, Nightmare Moon. Look upon the greatness of my Kingdom, Sister, and despair.
Once, long ago, Equestria was full of life. Then the Nightmare came. She cast down her sister, sealed away the sun and cursed the world to an eternal winter.
A thousand years later in the ruins of what was once Ponyville you find hoofprints, traces of the last pony. You follow them to answers, tragedy, and the terrible truth.
