Lord Destrustor

So long and thanks for all the fics!

T

The world is dangerous. It is not safe, not as safe as it used to be.
But this is why you are here. This is who you are, what you are.
You must protect the ponies.

Always.
You will protect.

A reading was made by the very talented (and very tired) TheExhaustedBrony!

... I... I think I'm addicted to writing...

Well hot damn. That was surprisingly awesome. Metal constructs built only to defend the citizens of Equestria? Right on, man, right on.

Huh... in hindsight, the part about the students treating Twilight like a friggin' princess is almost funny.

Ok, that was awesome.
That was a great story to take a break from my reading-spree with.
Because, whoa.

(Major spoilers from here on, read at your own risk and stuff.)

Following a "simple" mind like this, when it just executes the commands given to it, was great. The fact that you gave the thing some sympathy and basic understanding of emotions, made is so much greater to read.
It had one job, and it would give it's everything to fullfill that goal.

The idea of new threats spreading through Equestria in the near future, fullfilling as with Nightmare Moon, is a dark but pretty epic setting for this fic.
Returning to 122-b though.
I'm assuming that 122 is his number, and the letter might be a revision or something. That's how I interpretted it at least - that at the end, it was the same mech, but with a new "software" - version C.
Though, as you made him nod in the end, after just beeing reset, prooves that the bots might be able to learn, and gives the reader some hope for a more positive future for 122.
That ending made me just pause a little and think - 'Whoa, that was pretty awesome!' :rainbowdetermined2:

Have a like and fav - again, heh.

First of all, you are an awesome person to have as a reader.

The way I intended it, the "number" is basically the body itself. The letter indicates the number of times it was (re)activated, starting with "a" when brand-new. (it's for easier paperwork)

I tried to make a lot of things ambiguous in this, some of which I never even chose a "canon" answer for:
Are they simply very advanced constructs (like Shining says) or some kind of actual intelligence that Twilight catalyses somehow (Like she herself believes despite her own rational mind)?
There is a passage that specifically mentions that Twilight has been including the exact same bundle of knowledge in each and every unit since the beginning, to the point where she basically doesn't even need to think about it anymore.
As such, is 122-b's ability to learn a malfunction, or the erroneous assumption of such due to a previous malfunction that has caused it to lose that knowledge and/or wrongly perceive it as new? Are the units even supposed to be able to learn? Did Twilight slip up and add extra knowledge without her own knowing because of her inattention? Did she derp on B or on C? Which one is the most out of line, B who learned, or C who knows something it should not? Is nodding even supposed to be unusual? Is the body itself the one who retains the information? Is C actually B returned, or an all new consciousness? How could anything be left of B if the units' minds are pure magic, and none of it was left in 122?

Your guess is as good as mine, and I prefer it that way.

- First of all, you are an awesome person to have as a reader.
Heh, thanks, though, the ones who deserve praise are you guys, that are writing everything awesome on this site. :twilightblush:

And, that's even more questions than I was left with after reading this, you did really think this through as where you wanted to leave off your readers.

Just for the sake of it, let's do what I think about all of them:
- is 122-b's ability to learn a malfunction, or the erroneous assumption of such due to a previous malfunction that has caused it to lose that knowledge and/or wrongly perceive it as new? Are the units even supposed to be able to learn?
I think that the fact that it was able to learn, or at least mimic, showed the basic intelligence we were shown following 122 in the fic. It was capable of thoughts and basic emotions - and therefor I'd guess that it could mirror more basic things (not speech for example, but the nodding, or how to use a new weapon).
When you ask if it's a malfunction or not, as from what we know, we might never know (:facehoof:). The idea that nodding was something meant to be implemented, but failed on 122-b, is a curious one and changes the entire idea of that simple mention.
It makes this fic into following a more 'stupid'-version of a mech, when it learns what it was supposed to already know out in the field. That again, would show another kind of intelligence, and this view also is kinda positive. Even if 122-b failed it's mission, it was able to evolve, again, showing intelligence, and some hope.

- Did Twilight slip up and add extra knowledge without her own knowing because of her inattention? Did she derp on B or on C?
I don't think Twilight did anything different, even by mistake (if that makes sense). My idea is that B didn't black out completely, therefor not erasing everything it'd learned. Even if B started failing thoughts at the end (which, by the way, was greatly written :twilightsheepish:), maybe it's memories survived somewhere.

- Is nodding even supposed to be unusual?
Assuming that the bots should know about the expression of nodding, then yes. 122 learned about an expression in the field, not by its Mistress, as well as it learned how to utilze the make-shift weapon it was equipped with.
But, returning to the idea that the bots' should have known nodding, and 122 failed to get that from its initial info-boot, then, of course, no, nodding isn't unusual. But I prefer the idea that 122 learned something entirely new, instead of re-learning something it missed. :twilightsheepish:

- Is the body itself the one who retains the information?
That's an entire technical question, and would need some more insight into how the robots work. But, going for a far shot. I've seen the headcanon that magic in Equestria is a force that flows and interconnects everything in one way or another. If this is so, then, life brought to be by sheer magic, might be preserved in this force, say, 122's 'soul', or something, is kept alive because it was made by pure magic, and as such, the magic of the land wants to keep it alive.
So when it got rebuilt, and magic was poured into 122 again, it was this magic stored by the land.
... That kinda escalated, but, wanted to go outside the box a little. Made me think of Avatar (the movie) actually. :facehoof::twilightblush:

- Is C actually B returned, or an all new consciousness?
Note how I keep calling it '122', and not its "revision number" (as I see it). I think that, the consciousness might be reset, but the old one wasn't entirely erased, and therefor, what B learned is still buried deep within C. 122 just got a new chance when it became C.

- How could anything be left of B if the units' minds are pure magic, and none of it was left in 122?
(I didn't read all the questions before responding to them, might cause some repeating or reffering).
One theory could be what I replied to where the data would be stored.
Another could be what you mentioned, that the magic was saved somewhere within the body.
Or, maybe we, by extension Twilight and Shining, doesn't fully understand how the magic works and is stored. They have created intelligent life of magic, but do they know what they are playing with?

Ok, that was me replying what I thought about the topics your raised.
Roughly half of those questions were such I was theorizing about while reading or when I had finished reading this, so those got pretty long answers.

And finally, I'm glad that you're glad (:facehoof:) with my comments. I read, and if I have any idea what to say, I write it as a comment, pointing out what I enjoyed during my read. All the fics I read yesterday and today by you were such where I could say 'I enjoyed this or that', or that they invoked some thought that could be of use in a comment. Well, except Prince Blueblood and Human gas, that was just silly, heh.

So, yea, long comment, sorry for that.
Good day!

Beautiful. Well deserving of the fic spotlight.

Princess Twilight Sparkle caring about nonponies contradicts S03E03 “Too Many Pinkies” by Dave Polsky, also known as the worst episode of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, where Twilight Sparkle commits genocide against thinking feeling ponies she does not consider ponies because they are not born of mares. I suppose that she acts differently in this story because she makes the golems.

It is nice that the mind of the golem somehow survives. I wonder how many readers will notice that the standard knowledge does not include head-nodding/shaking, which this golem learned from the foals. Golem 122-C is not just a rebuild of Golem 122-B but Golem 122-B.

This was an interesting concept; you don't run into that many stories these days that are written in the second person. Still, very good as usual.

This was pretty awesome. "It nods" was maybe the best part.

WHY IS THIS STORY SO BEAUTIFUL AND SO SAD :fluttercry: :applecry: :pinkiesad2:

Very good story you have here. Keep up the good work.
