Have to disagree; there are people out there who would say this should be rated M, saying that this gender identity and transgenderism should wait until people are grown up and ready to make their own choices, and who would then try and say the subject shouldn't be broached at all and that people should accept how they were raised. Children go through this kind of situation, and they should be able to read about it, so they know they're not alone.

I can see how that scene could have spawned this story. I was definitely surprised too; I was expecting a more leaner look.
But to be fair, the changeling episodes after their reformation gave everyling the same build. Just as interesting as how the males of Kirins turned out to be the eyelashes.

Personally I like to make the joke that changelings just don’t get (that is, understand) gender issues, though I suppose that could still be the case here with the teasing not being about being a girl specifically so much as being transformed all the time: “Won’t you be constantly using magic to be a girl all the time? That seems silly.”
If I’ve got a complaint, it’s the fact that Ocellus doesn’t know about Smolder’s love of dresses, despite the fact that they’re supposed to now be married and living together, with Smolder’s trunk of them underneath the bed they presumably share. Maybe you should have set this before they got to that point, like they’ve only just started dating or something.
It’s sweet but feels half baked
Fascinating take on the consequences of the Thoracic Revolution, and an excellent showing from Smolder. (I’m reminded about the D&D joke about a dragonborn paladin with the noble background: You can be the knight, the dragon, or the princess as circumstances demand!) Thank you for a lovely read.
It felt a bit rushed to be honest, but wholesome overall. I agree that changeling culture may not have a very strong connection between biological sex and gender, simply because they can shapeshift at will into their desired form.
I'm curious, why the title "Damselfly"?

I have never once heard the term 'Thoracic Revolution' and now I'm giggling. I can only picture Thorax's friends struggling to reference the event in his presence without using the term, as it would surely make him uncomfortable.
I fully agree about the fascinating take. Changeling culture truly presents us with nearly infinite scenarios to explore in fanfiction!

Calling Ocellus, and other changelings for that matter, transgender is pushing it I feel. When you can turn into literally anything you can think of and can change sex just as often, does that term really apply?

In the context of this story? Yes. Changelings have a base form, Ocellus wants isn't happy with her assigned sex, so she changes. She clearly has dysphoria over it (flinching when asked she's a boy, etc.), she's scared of how it'll affect her relationships... Again, this likely wouldn't apply to canon, but in this story, she's trans. The fact that she can easily make the transition due to her magic doesnt make her any less trans.

Changelings can change themselves but it often seems to be a consistent (if simple) effort rather than a toggle switch. Most other fans write them in this same way.
Makes me wonder if Ocellus could call in a favour from Silverstream and borrow her Pearl shard. Of course, we've only seen it switch races but it's effects seem much more permanent.
