This story is a sequel to Re-Election in Ponyville: Defending Her Turf

Amethyst Star is readying herself for a third term and is hoping to push Ponyville in a way that the old traditions would never return. After Amethyst's historic rout in the primary, the traditionalists enlist what could be their last chance to bring back the old Ponyville, one of the most popular ponies in Equestria.

Twilight then broke down into tears, "I don't get it Spike. I was her protege, she practically raised me, she was like a second mother to me but she goes and endorses my opponent." Her cries became louder, "I feel betrayed Spike. I thought she would always be there for me and always support me...." she then became angry again, "but she supports Amethyst Star, Amethyst Star! She supports the pony who destroyed tradition and wants to ultimately make Ponyville unicorn only....UNICORN ONLY!"

Sheesh. I bet even Applejack, who has her head even further up her ass about tradition, doesn't think Amethyst would do that. You're not painting Twilight in a good picture here.

Granted, I've been on Amethyst's side from the start. Tradition is good and all. But only if it actually serves a purpose, and not a block on doing the right thing.

Twilight doesn't seem to care at all about doing the right thing. Some Princess of Friendship she is.

Ponyville has made it pretty clear about where they stand on this in previous stories.

Twilight then began her speech, "Well everypony, I guess this is it. I guess this is proof that nopony who advocates tradition will ever stand a chance." She became more emotional, "And it is all because of Amethyst! She is making sure unicorns are the majority, unicorns from large cities who care nothing about traditions. I'm certain that" Twilight began to cry "that even Princess Celestia is happy. She was supposed to support me no matter what but not only does she endorse Amethyst but she showed up for her watch party!" She finally broke down, "I can't do this anymore, I just can't."

Okay, this is what ended whatever good feeling about Twilight I had, for good. She just openly admited, in not so many words, she doesn't care at all about doing what's right. If Applejack is no better, than frankly they don't deserve to be the Elements of Harmony.

Is it too much to ask for Celestia giving Twilight a serious lecture about all of this? I'd try it myself. But I could never do it right, even if you said I could.

I've decided to do a fourth one. No traditionalists will be involved, well in running anyway, but this time around it is going to turn nasty.

10460616
Not sure what else can be done. Unless Twilight goes full on 'Lesson Zero turned up to 11' over this, and how Ponyville and Equestria has made it crystal clear where they stand, and does something REALLY stupid.

But that's just me.

10460624

Twilight ain't going to go Lesson Zero here. I'm not sure if Twilight will even have any role in the next one....hell her very presence in the story is completely unnecessary. Unless I decide to have her raise a fuss to Celestia or bitch to Sunny Flames in an interview, the story would be fine without her. Also, Breaking News is out of this series entirely. Given that Written Script is in charge of politics for the Ponyville Express, Breaking News is no longer necessary.

10460683
I think it would be nice to see Celestia and Twilight getting something. If not as part of the next story, then as a side story.

Frankly, Twilight is everything wrong with politics, in any universe in general, in this story, while Amethyst is everything a politician should be. Not that she's perfect. But I'd vote for her, if I could.

Twilight comes across as utterly unworthy of her title and status. I think Celestia has been too nice to her for so long, and now it's showing. I think there needs to be a serious teacher to student talk, one long overdue.

Heck, I get the feeling that the next villain will win and Equestria is doomed, becuase two of the Elements of Harmony are so cut off from reality, that I can't see their Elements working.

I'm probably overthinking it though.

10460704

Well Twilight and Celestia will get along again. That would have to come in a side story because the next one is going to involve Amethyst and another unicorn, one much like her, being the only two candidates. Thing is, I plan on having the next election turn nasty. Regarding Twilight, she doesn't have a clue about politics....and if it weren't for Applejack, she wouldn't have been the way she was. Yes she still would have let her heart guide her but she would have thought more with her head too.

10460852
That's another reason I feel Twilight had no right to win. Political croneism at its worst. It's a wonder Equestria is still here with these ponies saving it.

Would've been interesting to see how much close the election would be if Twilight hadn't been pandering solely to Applejack and the sticks in the mud, and thought and acted like the pony we know and love.

I'd think that, even if she had lost to Amethyst, she wouldn't be a sore loser about it. Twilight would've probably taken it as a learning experience.

If I could write politics that wasn't a carbon copy of this universe in a lot of ways, even if it wasn't set in the same universe or connected to it at all, I would. Oh well.

10460885

Now the next one will be MUCH closer because there will not be any traditionalists running in it and Amethyst will face off against opponents she can't so easily take down. I am thinking of bringing in a candidate from the third one to face off against her, one who will have lost the bad things that hurt her so badly. I am thinking of changing her into a rational thinking pony with no biases but one who will have the right type of personality and desires to match Amethyst's political savvy.

10460885

Hey, I'm pretty sure you could write a good politics story. I've been a cable news junkie since Bill Clinton was in office so that is why this seemed to flow so well for me. Maybe you could do one in which a Constitutional Monarchy is established and Equestria has to elect a Parliament and a Prime Minister....or you could do a mayoral election story in maybe a different city, one that doesn't have the same history as Ponyville.

Ouch..... Twilight SO got destroyed in this election and while I feel bad for her, she shouldn't have run for Mayor in the first place. To be honest, she was just Applejack's puppet and both of them lacked a basic sense of reality about how much Ponyville's changed since Mayor Mare fell from power and that it's impossible to turn back the clock.

When Amethyst Star exposed the fact that Twilight was only running because Applejack pushed her into it, it was basically the verbal version of a fatality move from Mortal Kombat as she had Twilight beaten already but opted to seal the deal so to speak. I imagine Celestia felt bad seeing her former student get verbally skewered and lose so badly as well as be hurt emotionally but Celestia had to think of the greater good of Equestria and its economy so she had to let Twilight burn and crash in order to show her that times were changing and that she had to look towards the future and not be like Breaking News whose STILL being his cranky self and shooting off conspiracy theories. Sure, the Unicorns are settling into Ponyville and now form the majority of ponies in it but that doesn't mean that there's a big Unicorn conspiracy at work here going back to 2016. Still, it's a big surprise that Ponyville's grown so much since Amethyst became mayor but do many of the Earth Ponies and Pegasi dislike change so much that they'd move away?

Frankly, Twilight's mess is Applejack's fault. She won't accept that Ponyville's changing and wants to cling to outdated traditions like old religious text. First she tries to run in the last election and when that fails, she convinces Rarity to run in this one and when THAT fails, she pushes Twilight into running in this election which leads to Twilight's heart getting broken and causes rifts to form between her and other people. You should have a side fic where Starlight and Rainbow Dash call out Applejack for putting Twilight through hell and back because of her stubborn pride.

As for Trixie and Colgate, I was amused at Trixie's antics and guessed that she wasn't going to get too far while Colgate's racism shocked me along with her poor performance. I'd thought that she was going to be Amethyst's main rival in the end but I was wrong. Why is Colgate so racist anyway?

Speaking of Amethyst, I actually was supporting her against Twilight though I winced whenever she verbally skewered Twilight in their debate. I can't imagine she wanted to cause Twilight so much pain and angst as she's a good person at heart but she had a job to do and felt that she had to keep Ponyville prosperous even if it meant having to verbally skewer the Princess of Friendship but at least she stuck to attacking Twilight's poor policy ideas and the fact that Applejack pushed her to run for Mayor.

I quite enjoyed this fic and look forward to its sequel.

Amethyst Star utterly incinerated Twilight in this debate! Twilight needs to stop living in the past and move forward plus she needs to stop listening to conspiracy theories put forth by Breaking News and Applejack. Besides, Twlight's a Unicorn turned Ailcorn so she should be on Amethyst's side and would likely be in secret if not for Applejack's influence.

By the way, what's Mayor Mare up to these days now that she's no longer the mayor? I hope she's doing ok as I like her and felt that she did a good job as mayor despite her glaring flaws in her policies.

By the way, what's Mayor Mare up to these days now that she's no longer the mayor? I hope she's doing ok as I like her and felt that she did a good job as mayor despite her glaring flaws in her policies.

Mayor Mare is simply enjoying retired life. She realizes that the old Ponyville isn't returning and she is living with it....hell she even hits the casinos every now and then. She doesn't care for Amethyst but does know that what she did was for the best when it comes to Ponyville's economic health.

When Amethyst Star exposed the fact that Twilight was only running because Applejack pushed her into it, it was basically the verbal version of a fatality move from Mortal Kombat as she had Twilight beaten already but opted to seal the deal so to speak.

Keeping Ponyville out of debt and seeing continued economic growth is something Amethyst is very passionate about and she wanted badly to guarantee not just victory, but a rout. She wanted to send a message so clear even the most hardline traditionalists would know that their old ways will NEVER return. When Amethyst learned that Twilight would be her opponent, she wanted to flat out embarrass her. She holds nothing against Twilight personally, she simply isn't going to care about the feelings of her opponents, politics doesn't work that way.

I imagine Celestia felt bad seeing her former student get verbally skewered and lose so badly as well as be hurt emotionally but Celestia had to think of the greater good of Equestria

Yeah Celestia felt bad, well sort of, but she thought this would be a good learning lesson for Twilight. She was far from pleased when she learned she was only doing it for AJ because she didn't basically raise her to go against what is best for the common good....although Tia did want fiscal responsibility which is why she came out and endorsed reformists across the country.

Breaking News whose STILL being his cranky self and shooting off conspiracy theories.

I pretty much created Breaking News to be comedy material, one for people to laugh at over his backwards ways. He won't be in the next one though, I brought in Written Script because I decided I had milked Breaking News for all he was worth.

Yeah Applejack truly is that stubborn but after this, she knows it is too late. She has exhausted all her resources and there is nopony else that will run for her. Of course Big Mac supports Amethyst because of how much she has helped the farm, same goes with Granny Smith. Yes Apple Bloom will be old enough to run come the next one but she will have realized that Amethyst ain't going to lose to a traditionalist. She doesn't like warm winters but knows that most creatures do.

You think the Unicorn population is big now, wait until the next one. Their business savvy is even beginning to cause other creatures to go to places where they are more likely to succeed. The unicorns will make up 80% of the population next time.

I put Trixie in for comic relief and regarding Colgate, I kind of wanted to create a polar opposite of Breaking News....and I wanted Colgate to be an edgy version of Amethyst. What she didn't know though was that even other unicorns wouldn't put up with her racism. She simply figured she could take the unicorn vote with her beliefs and cruise on to victory.

It wasn't Amethyst's plan to cause her so much pain, she wanted to drive a stake into the heart of traditionalism and if it meant flat out embarrassing Twilight, she was all for it. Now I have one big problem, how am I going to make a candidate that will actually be able to challenge Amethyst. I do know that the candidate will have to be a unicorn and a reformist with only slightly different beliefs, perhaps a slight difference on the sales tax, business taxes or taxes on casino winnings over 1,000 bits.

I am thinking of trying to either remake Colgate or bring in a transplant from Canterlot....but not somepony like Fancy Pants because Amethyst would turn his elite status against him. Hell even Filthy Rich wouldn't support him, but then again Amethyst has him in her saddle bags to start with. With Colgate, I could remake her and turn this into the nastiest election in Equestrian history. I just wish the hell I had got to work on something like this sooner because I don't have time to get it done before this election cycle is over....but I really don't want to wait until the 2022 mid-terms either.

To think that I once thought that Colgate would be Amethyst's main foe in the election. She got destroyed in the primary thanks to her racist comment about Earth Ponies, she behaved just like a snobby Canterlot elite such as Blueblood would. It'd be funny to see her and Breaking News argue with one another......

Trixie was an obvious joke candidate while Rarity was blatantly Applejack's puppet candidate and everyone knew it. What does Applejack have against big cities anyway? Even in canon, she was nervous about them like when she and Rarity visited Manehattan on a friendship mission. I know she isn't used to them but cities aren't bad.

10515711

Her issue with the big cities is that they are not traditional. She does not like them that much because they are not only not traditional but that Amethyst is implementing the way they are ran in Ponyville, which is no longer the small town that it once was. She knows the old days are gone and simply can't accept it.

I'll admit that I'm glad that Amethyst got rid of winter in Ponyville since I HATE winter and I regard her as a hero for doing so even if she had to hire unicorn mages to fix the problems caused by a lack of winter.

Hearing Celestia lecture Twilight was painful but Twilight needed to hear what her mentor had to say as Ponyville has indeed changed a lot plus Twilight only ran as a favour to Applejack whose being a stubborn Traditionalist as always.

10512062

Sorry for the late response but regarding the conspiracy theories, those are not Applejack's. This is Twilight being paranoid on a level that makes the situation with the friendship letter and Pinkie ruining her three-peat with the trivia trot look like small potatoes.

Let's be honest. Any chance Twilight has of doing something big for Equestria is gone. No Friendship Festival, and no School of Friendship come to mind mostly.

Unless these stories ignore most of the big stuff from the later part of the show altogether. Hard to tell what didn't and won't happen.

10895613

This story ignores what happens later in the show, it has no affect on it. This basically shows that Twilight isn't fit for municipal politics.
