Nice story overall, although i would suggest to reduce the pacing a little,
maybe by adding a bit more description or exposition to the scenes and dialogs.

Because you stated that Spitfire had hands, and if that were true then Spike would be a dog, and they wouldn't be able to fly without airplanes, which is obviously not what they have been doing.
