If you didn't get it, the story explicitly states that humans needed to build sanctuaries for the pets that are left without their masters. Unlike humans, ponies aren't heartless, and they care about those animals. Once they're done, though, they will be recycled into wastes or turned into mindless husks and left out to rot.

Every single model has Antarctica as one of the continents (most reduce North and South America into one continent, along with various combinations of Europe/Asia/Africa).
However, it is generally agreed these days that there are seven.
Oh, well by all means edit your story so that it is accurate. But do remember that there are people living in Antarctica year-round (though they are, indeed, not considered permanent population).
