There have been stories with a similar premise to this, but I believe this is the first I've seen where Luna kills Celestia (or the other way around) instead of just banishing her or sealing her away. Anyway, good story. I sense much potential in this Equus Empire idea.

6160508 Hmm... Let's discuss this idea. If Twilight were to resurrect Celestial, what would prompt her to do so? Also importantly, how does she discover the Elements? Not to put any pressure, so sorry in advance if it feels like that, but this is an interesting prompt, and I thought I would offer my thoughts.
Assuming each Equestrian year is one Human year, one year later, on the Winter Moon Celebration, Discord will break out of his stone prison. Twi will probably have met the Mane Five and they, in turn, have met our AU ruler Luna. In this situation, Luna, unable to defeat the draconequus, enlists the help of her High Priestess of the Moon for unknown reasons. She vaguely recalls the power which allowed her and her sister to defeat him last time, but cannot handle them on her own. She also wants to make sure they power theM because she can feel her grip on sanity slipping as regret consumes her. Being the creature he is, Discord scatters them across the Hedge Maze as one of the four objectives in his much more deadly game: Find, survive, regroup, defeat. In this idea, the story would be a mashup of the S1 and 2 premieres, each pony discovering something that connects them to an Element (in a Maze Challenge), being turned against it, and being pulled back together. At the end, the leftover power from the Elements, with six users instead of two, flows over Equestria (kind of like Rainbow Power, but the Mane Six don't Mega Evolve) and basically grants everyone in the kingdom a small wish. Celestia isn't brought back, per say, but Luna has an illusion in which she gets to say all those things she wanted to and see both other variations (Canon Equestria and Dual-Ruled Equestria) of her kingdom, thus pushing away her connection to Nightmare. However, the mental challenge ensues as the feeling of possession is fresh in her mind.
Clearly this is just an idea, and I probably messed up a lot, but that's what I think would happen.

I suppose a somewhat bittersweet "resurrected Celestia" could come through Twilight's ascension, were she to secretly exchange her soul for Celestia's during the process, out of dedication to her Empress.
You know.... the Nightmare Moon in this case should be the raging darkness that Celestia also buried inside her. How it was born was when Luna killed Celestia it slipped into the shadows and slowly manifested itself until it could gain enough power.... it hid behind her closest friends.. her most trusted advisers and fed off their doubts, fears, and anger.... all of their negative emotions in order to grow stronger.... but it's biggest feeding point was when Luna was asleep.... and it found the Nightmare. Bonding with it they create a new and evil Celestia who vanishes into darkness.... until the time was right.

It may be something of a struggle to differentiate yourself from the multitude of other somewhat similar tales out there, but I think you may have the skill to pull it off.
