To make matters worse, magic seems to be running amok during the competition, and Sunset Shimmer finds herself amidst an existential crisis as she attempts to find her place in the world.

If the first weeks of the Great War had raised concerns over the ability of Royal Armoured Corps of the Equestrian Army in comparison to their Changeling counterparts, the disastrous Battle of Talewood in early 1010ALB laid bare the inadequacy of their equipment beyond any doubt. An answer was needed and ideally, it would arrive three moons ago.
Now it falls to industrialists more used to tractors than tanks to come up with a new vehicle capable of standing up to the mechanised fury of the Changeling war machine, but with the Heer gaining ground every day, will anyone deliver a working model in time to turn the tide of the Great War?

This story has been announced as the second place winner of the Fifth Annual Equestria at War Writing Contest! The prompt was "Magic making way for technology."
This is a short story set in the world of the acclaimed Hearts of Iron 4 mod, Equestria at War. It is set in the Quenta Roccolië timeline.
Rated Everyone, but contains mild injuries (nothing worse than a Jerry Anderson series might show).

Shining Armor has lived a long and happy life alongside his wife Cadance. Though they never managed to have another child, they've held the Crystal Empire strong against many enemies, helping to spread friendship all across the world.

But merely being married to an Alicorn Princess has not protected him from the ravages of time. Where many others would have to say farewell to their immortal children and relatives, something else is waiting for Shining Armor.

His younger sister, ruler of Equestria, is unwilling to say goodbye, and has perfected a spell that will allow him to stay with his family. He has little time to decide: accept the spell, or say goodbye to his family forever. It isn't really much of a choice.

A warning for potentially sensitive readers: this is a story about cute role-reversals. Though it includes Gleaming Shield and physical transformation, it has neither the scope nor the wordcount to deal with the more sensitive topics of personal identity and dysphoria. Things I could not treat with the respect they deserved were left out of the story completely.

Twilight Sparkle is the top student of Crystal Prep... but she does not like being there. Everyone is always trying to one up each other and no one wants to be friends.

The only person who shows her any care is her sister-in-law, Dean Cadance, now that her brother is long since gone from the school and the only real friend she has there is her dog, Spike.

Thankfully, something odd has been occurring not too far from Crystal Prep's rival school, Canterlot High, that has been keeping her mind off those sad parts of her life. She has been noticing some very weird reports and energy readings from there.

However, her research into the odd events come to both a grinding halt and something rapidly advance when, late one night, she finds a box on her house's front doorstep and, inside the box, is little purple pony with a horn and wings. Unbeknownst to her, it's her Pony Counterpart, Princess Twilight Sparkle.

Only there's one small problem: She's a baby, a PONY baby and now Twilight finds herself taking care of a foal with powers that make her shudder. No matter how bad tempered a baby her brother tells her she was, this foal eclipses her tantrums but dimensions.

Fun fact: I actually came up with this idea shortly after Friendship Games, not Ail-icorn.
