After vanishing from a curse for more than 1000 years, little is known about the Crystal Empire and its inhabitants. Especially the final years of King Sombra's rule remain shrouded by mystery. Even to the crystal ponies themselves as their memories remain effected by the tyrant King's dark magic.

Now the Crystal Empire has returned and King Sombra has been defeated, but the aftermaths of his cruelty still linger within his former subjects.

One crystal pony begins travelling through Equestria to learn about her past and finds friends along the way. Will revealing her past help her understand more of herself and find a place in this new future?

Her first trip leads her to Sweet Apple Acres in Ponyville, where she meets the Apple family and the recently coronated Princess of Friendship.

Spike is one day accused of a crime he didn't commit, as usual, nopony believed him except Fancy Pants because he and Spike had been hanging with each other. Spike still gets banished, but princess Luna believes Spike is innocent but they didn't have much evidence. Spike is transported to the badlands where he learns to fend for himself. He then slowly, builds up his own nation. The Crystal ponies starts hating their rulers and start violent protest around the empire. When they find the murderer of Fleur De Lis, everypony realises their mistake, but can they fix it?

"Once upon a time, in the magical land of Equestria, there were two regal sisters who ruled together and created harmony for all the land. To do this, the eldest sister used her unicorn powers to raise the sun at dawn. The younger brought out the moon to begin the night. Thus, the two sisters maintained balance for their kingdom and their subjects: all the different types of ponies.

"But as time went on, the two sisters grew greedy and covetous of their neighbors to the north. The Crystal Empire stood ready to defend themselves, but even their prince, noble and kind, could not contend with their power. On the fateful day they turned on their once friend, they became the ultimate perversions of their former selves. The elder sister became Solaria Dawn, herald of light and hate, and the younger became Night Mare Moon, harbinger of darkness and fear.

"Reluctantly, the noble prince delved into the darkness and found the forbidden powers needed to save his empire from certain doom. With the might of the shadows, combined with the mystical strength of the crystal heart and the elements of harmony, he was able to defeat his former friends and bring peace to all of Equestria, bearing the responsibility of both sun and moon. This story is a sequel to A Sheet in the Wind (Iota Force Issue #5)

There is an ancient Pegasopolitan saying. Literally translated, it reads, "Those who seek trouble often find it. Those who prepare for trouble are often found by it. Those who do both always meet it." However, this is somewhat longwinded in modern Equestrian, so a more concise version of the saying is used in the modern day:

"Where heroes go, trouble follows."

Thus, it is sadly unsurprising that, on a week-long field trip (AKA vacation) to the Crystal Empire, Iota Force, Ponyville's young super hero team, encounter a mystery that demands their attention... and that in doing so, some of them get dropped into the middle of danger.

Now, trapped and isolated, Icy Flight, Archer and Truffle Shuffle must escape from the depths of the Caves of Sombra, fight their way through a gauntlet of traps and illusions and, somehow, stop the young pony responsible from reaching her goal and escaping.

Cut off from their town, their friends and even the rest of the team, can they survive and get through when they're all alone?

Well, maybe not quite totally alone...

This is the sixth story in the Iota Force series. Reading the previous stories would be helpful and will help give some things context, but hopefully the story will stand on its own. However, just to be safe, a summary of the series' premise, characters and previous stories can be found here.
