Many years have passed since Discord's first defeat at the hooves of the Alicorns. Equestria has enjoyed a time of peace and prosperity under the rule of Celestia and Luna. However, all good things must come to an end.

Equestria is now faced with a new threat from the north. With Celestia unable to fight, the fate of the world rests solely upon her sister, Luna. Perhaps, with the help of a trio of unlikely heroes, Luna can defeat this new foe, and save Equestria in the process.

Sunset Shimmer has returned, having travelled between worlds and crossed the dark spaces between dimensions to emerge changed, both more and less than a pony. Driven by a dream of impending doom, she sets out to unite the races of the world, heedless of the destruction that she would bring upon the world in the name of saving it. With the support of the proud zebras of Grevyia she launches an assault upon Equestria that will bring down the princesses and shake the peaceful land to its foundations. Using the power of the ancient Labyrinth Box, she imprisons the four mages who alone can threaten her: Twilight Sparkle, Breaking Dawn, Trixie and Chrysalis the Changeling. Now these former foes must work together to recover their true identities and escape the terrors of their enchanted prison.

With Twilight missing, Applejack and Pinkie Pie enslaved and Canterlot taken, Rarity must take up the mantle of leadership as Regent of Equestria, while Fluttershy braves dragons, deer and griffons in her quest for allies. And, as Sunset's tyranny grows ever more cruel, it falls upon the slender shoulders of the Cutie Mark Crusaders to be the salvation of Equestria.

Back in Ponyville, Rainbow Dash has suffered a terrible accident and her ability to fly has been reduced. After losing her dream to become a member of the Wonderbolts Rainbow Dash has resorted to drinking away her sorrows with hard cider. However she will soon find herself on a journey, which will intertwine with that of her friend Twilight Sparkle and the terrible secret hidden in the Mirror-Stone Wasteland.

Unit overview: The 1st SOG is a elite special forces unit that uses extremely advanced weaponry and tactics to accomplish operations that regular units would find nearly impossible. It is split into four sub-units that often operate independently from each other, though often lending support to the others. An interesting fact worth mention is that the unit's equipment, as well as half the personnel, are of alien origins. They call themselves 'humans', and all became ponies upon arrival in Equestria, which they claim is a complete accident. After arrival, they eventually became part of the Equestrian military, and have trained ponies to use their surplus equipment becoming the 1st SOG. Since their inception, they have distinguished themselves, successfully eliminating two rampaging dragons and three hydras.

So...I am currently in the process of writing a different version of this story. Its gonna be a fair while before I post it, but it has the similar but heavily revamped plot written in a completely different style. So keep an eye out for that.

After accidentally creating a weapon of mass destruction, Twilight is forced to confront a choice she made long ago in order to assist the war effort and a secret military order.

Twilight Sparkle is Princess Celestia's number one student. She is thought to be the smartest unicorn alive. A close second to Star Swirl the Bearded. Twilight is given a test. No ordinary one. Her test is to go to the Crystal Empire and protect it. This place is to be protected from an unholy threat. A demon made of pure malice that feeds off the fear of those it approaches, is attempting to reclaim the Crystal Empire.
It is Twilight's job to stop it.

She fails in doing so.
