It was a secret that caused her downfall.

Applejack always knew Winona was the dog for her. Even before she met her, and Winona was just another puppy in a box, Applejack knew.

Twilight Velvet loves her daughter with all her heart; she outshines her in every way, is the prized student of Princess Celestia, and will no doubt go on to have an impact on Equestria the likes of which has never been seen before and never will be again. But despite Twilight Velvet's pride and love for Twilight Sparkle, somber thoughts weigh heavily on her mind when her daughter comes to visit.

Why does Velvet feel so inadequate? Why can't she be to her daughter what Princess Celestia is to her? What is the measure of a mother?

Set prior to Season 1. Celestia doesn't physically appear but is mentioned extensively.

Despite their supposed massive power, Alicorns have done a rather poor job of saving the day. Twilight discovers that there's an actual reason for that.

Prince Blueblood, the last Prince of the Unicornian dynasty, winner of three consecutive beauty contests, patron of the arts, and a highly sought-over stallion, is, as described, vital to the political life of the Equestrian kingdom. Princess Celestia's secretary Raven, an overall unremarkable, barely present in any records, plain unicorn pony, is nothing in particular, and was most likely sent merely to make sure nobody at all troubles the brilliant mind that is Blueblood. The dozen engineers that operate their vehicle on the way to, and especially back from, the capital of the Frozen North, are simply lucky to have had a chance to share a trip with the sterling Prince.

That is the status quo all of them would like to believe, and it is definitely not going to stay intact over the 42 days it will take them to return.

Part of a prequel one-shot series to a much bigger fic, currently in the works. It is definitely more Dark than Comedy, so don't expect the usual Comedy fare. It was not the intent of the fic, more the outcome of putting these characters into these situations with this story in mind. TL;DR INCREDIBLY DARK, less incredibly comedic.

Inspired by the day and night court, Celestia suggests that Twilight opens her own court, giving everypony the ability to reach her with their problems and requests. Twilight doesn’t know what to think of it, but she soon will. Too soon, she sees that things seldom go as expected, and she finds herself hiding in her own nightmare.

Poor financial decisions like forgoing star-spawn insurance and blowing all her bits on the Alicorn Amulet have left Trixie unable to pay for her appointment with the medium in Hollow Shades. Having discovered the magic of friendship, she has a deal to alter lest she incur the wrath of Tartarus. If only somepony who understood her plight could help her in her time of need. Unbeknownst to her, that somepony has been watching her perform from across the tavern.
