The wheel keeps on turning.

I'm reminded of The Last Unicorn (which is amazing) when Schmendrick turned the unicorn, an immortal being, into a mortal woman. The most heartbreaking line to me was "I can feel this body dying all around me!".

This was really interesting! The cuts between the dream and real life worked well to show Adagio's feelings.

One hand grasped a chalice of fine, crimson wine. The other clutched a dagger, terribly sharp. From one she slit the throats of her enemies, and from the other she drank their pitiful life.

She would never be felled. Not ever again.

And she would own the world.

assuming these are Adagio’s ambitions, yes, that all tracks

"You definitely ate something of mine the other night."

gottem

"The beach. You've taken me to the beach. Is this some kind of joke? We don't even have our swimsuits."

it must feel like a cruel joke to be taken to the beach while trapped in the body of a monkey-creature that dies pathetically in the ocean

Adagio, unimpressed, watched with her arms folded.

ah, her default stance

Adagio rolled her eyes. "It's a weak, simple creature. Who cares what happens to it?"

"Strength isn't everything, Adagio." With a final scritch, Sunset placed the octopus back in its pool. "Sometimes, being strong means forging on, even when you're weak."

aww, thematic!

She waited, as the blood dripped into her wine. Eventually the flow subsided.

Glaring at the sea, she brought the cup to her lips.

symbolism!

The wrinkle.

She screamed, flinging the pocket mirror against the wall. It shattered, and she saw her ugly reflection crying back at her a million times over.

oof. being trapped in a body doomed to age and wither and die is bad enough, it’s all the worse if you were promised something different

She tried to scream, but her head was underwater.

oof!

A shuddering breath escaped her, like a mighty gust of wind to bring the empire in her dreams crumbling down.

and oof, yeah. going from that empire in her dreams to this fragile and mortal reality, Adagio really is quite a fascinating character

"I know. But how you view yourself will never change the way I view you."

Adagio breathed in sharply.

"I love you," she said.

Sunset kissed her on the lips.

Adagio loved her crimson hair.

"I love you, too."

and aww, what a sweet way to end it! lovely meditation on SunDagio, thank you for writing!

I’ve never been one for this pairing, personally, but I can see it. Still, I feel you were a bit overambitious with this one. I do love the dream imagery as Adagio drowns in time and tide, but the second chapter ends up feeling vestigial. There’s just not enough space to explore all the ideas this story wants to cover, and while I do like the concept of Adagio learning the more subtle strength of persistence, there just aren’t enough words to really capture it alongside everything else.

Still, great imagery and even a good job of capturing the essence of the relationship in relatively few words. Thank you for this.
