The Perfect Little Village of Ponyville

Epilogue: Post-Mortem of a Dream

Twilight Sparkle woke up.

She was back in the teleportation room in Canterlot Castle.

Waking up at the exact same instant was Vinyl Scratch.

No other ponies were in the room.

“Greetings, Twilight Sparkle,” said the voice of Cecil. “Welcome back, Vinyl.

Twilight had no idea why the talking rock had poured so much more emotion into Vinyl’s salutation than into hers.

She tried to sit up, and immediately hissed in pain. She summoned an ice pack to wrap around her haunches.

Vinyl Scratch winced in sympathy. “I hope you’re not hurt too badly, Twilight.”

“Don’t worry about it, it’s just a bruise,” said Twilight. “I’ll just be walking funny for a while. After all, I’m the one who almost killed you all.” The weight of what she said suddenly sunk in. “I am so sorry, Vinyl,” she pleaded.

“It’s alright,” Vinyl said, carefully adjusting her sunglasses. “I’ve always wondered what it would be like to see.”

This wasn’t quite the response Twilight was expecting. “Um...and what did you think? Of seeing, that is.”

“You can keep it. I’m much more comfortable with my darkness.” Vinyl then got up and walked over to the wall, feeling her way around until she reached the door.

“So what happens now?” Twilight asked. “And where are the others? Are...are we awake?”

Vinyl Scratch tried to open the door, and failed, using both her hooves and her magic. She then pounded on it. “Do you hear that?” she asked. “No echo. There’s solid stone behind that door. I think that means that this isn’t the real room, just a dream version.”

Vinyl reached back with her mind, and realized that the details of the dream she had just experienced were fading, just like any other dream.

“Am I dreaming?” asked Cecil, unnoticed by the ponies. “It doesn’t feel like a dream...”

“I believe you, Vinyl,” Twilight said, nodding. “We’re in a dream trap chain. The only way out is through. If only we could control which pony’s dream we visit next...”

“Well, that depends,” said Vinyl. “What do you think of the song ‘25 or 6 to 4’, by Sheeka-Go? Or was it Chicago? I’m not quite sure how to pronounce it.”

“The group’s name is pronounced ‘Chicacolt’, and the song is my favorite one out of Pinkie Pie’s collection.”

Vinyl Scratch just had to know. “Does the title mean anything?”

Twilight scratched her head. “Well it’s about staying up late studying...I think,” she said. “So why did you ask about that song?”

“When Cecil’s spell failed to work on me, I used that song to dance my way in.”

Dance your way...into my dream?” asked Twilight incredulously.

“Indeed!” exclaimed Cecil. “It was amazing!

The sheer amount of passion the rock had put into that last word slightly unnerved Twilight.

Vinyl on the other hoof didn’t seem to notice. She said, “I think we can repeat that technique to target any pony’s dream we want, just so long as we know their favorite songs.”

“And this should get easier as we go on,” said Twilight, getting excited. “In my dream, only you knew that anything was wrong at the start, and you lacked your memories. Well next time, you’ll know who you are, and so will I. We wake that dreamer up, and there will be three of us in the next dream, and four in the next, and five in the final dream. And after that...the Dragon Emperor.”

“So whose dream do we invade first?” asked Vinyl.

“We’re going to be visiting the dark secrets and mad dreamscapes of each of our friends. Now who is the best possible navigator to bring along on our journey?”

“Pinkie Pie.”

“Exactly.”

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is copyright Hasbro, with extra credit given to Lauren Faust for the specifics of the series. The characters of DJ Pon-3 (aka Vinyl Scratch), Spike, Rarity, Applejack, Pinkie Pie/Pinkamena, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Twilight Sparkle, Nightmare Moon/Princess Luna/Black Snooty, Princess Celestia, Mayor Mare, Graphite (the fan name of a real background character from the show; he was officially named Dark Moon two years after I wrote this story), Doctor Whooves, Caramel, Big Mac, Soarin’, Applebloom, the Diamond Dogs, the locations of Equestria, Canterlot, Ponyville, Appleloosa, Manehattan, Fillydelphia, the Everfree Forest and the Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters, and the concepts of the Summer Sun Celebration, Winter Wrap-Up, and the Elements of Harmony (and their reference guide) are taken from that source, although the radically-different interpretations of all of these is my doing. Stalliongrad is a fan creation. The characters of the Dragon Emperor (both of them), Waking Terror and Cecil, and the concepts of the Draconic Bloodline Code, using “diamond dust” as a mind-control agent, “The Number 11”, the Gifts of the Ancients, Skybreak, the Dream Trap and Dream Trap Chain spells, the location of Castle by the Sea, and the company Equestria Acoustics are my creations. As for Apple Incorporated, their trademarked Applebug and their copywrited phrase “Appletastic Treats”...anybody wanna buy some stock in an imaginary pony fruit conglomerate?

“25 or 6 to 4” is a 1969 song by Chicago. The blistering performance used here is from the 1969 Toronto Rock and Roll Revival concert. The sunrise song is the first movement of Symphony No. 6 in D (1761) by Franz Joseph Haydn, nicknamed the “Morning” (performed by Adam Fischer and the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra). “Once Upon a December” is from the soundtrack of Anastasia (recording is a remix by D3Y Featuring Lauren). The songs sung in the prison are “Ol’ Man River” (from Show Boat, 1927—here’s one of Paul Robeson’s performances of the song), “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” (traditional—here’s a performance by Louis Armstrong), “Amazing Grace” (John Newton, 1779—here’s a performance by Nana Mouskouri), “Danny Boy” (Frederic Weatherly, 1913—here’s a performance by the three least articulate characters ever “The Leprechaun Brothers”...)

...and “River of Jordan” [“There is only one river...”] (Peter, Paul and Mary, 1972—the performance is by Lorna Patterson from the movie Airplane!, 1980). “The Smile Song” is from the Friendship Is Magic episode “A Friend In Deed” (2012); it was written by Amy Keating Rogers and Daniel Ingram and was sung by Shannon Chan-Kent and Andrea Libman. “Wake, Awake” is the English translation of “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme”, a chorale by Philipp Nicolai (1599). Here is a performance of the English chorale by the Wartburg Choir, and here is the fantastic Bach version of the second verse (1731) performed by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra led by Ton Koopman.

I probably forgot a lot of the inside jokes I snuck into this story, but here are the ones where I remember where they come from. “Who’s a silly pony” is the name of a Generation 1 My Little Pony song. “It’s a funny-sounding word: Obey” is from a Bill Cosby routine about marriage vows. “A word of kindness is better than a fat pie” is a Russian proverb (although I’m sure I got it from a movie or something...). “Kneel Before Zod” of course is from Superman (1978). “The Dreaded Pinkamena Diana Pie” has been said to have been inspired by “The Dread Pirate Roberts” from The Princess Bride (1987), but the characters differ from each other as much as they are similar—I just thought that “dread” went well with P.D.P.’s name. Her sign is an example of the “Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking” TV Trope (and yes, I was evil enough just now to drop a TV Tropes link in here to suck up all your free time). Poncho is more than a little inspired by the alter ego of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon character Quick Draw McGraw: El Kabong. Pinkamena’s manifesto is based on Tom Joad’s speech at the end of The Grapes of Wrath. Toronado is Zorro’s horse (character created by Johnston McCulley, 1919). The “Hounds” that Cecil says possess the unconscious in the Astral Planes were inspired by the short story “The Hounds of Tindalos” by Frank Belknap Long (1931). The idea that you can get anything you want by lying down in a field and wishing really hard is from A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs . Each and every use of the number 42 ever are inspired by The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (1978). The “Bigby” from Bigby’s Book of Non-Unicorn Mental Magic is a reference to the Dungeons & Dragons non-player character created by Rob Kurtz in 1973 and for whom so many wizard spells were named. The Mystery Spot is the name of several tourist attractions (I’ve been to the one in Santa Cruz, California) but is more memorably known from the PC game Sam & Max Hit the Road (1993)—of course in the end it turns out to be YouTube (2005-present; the cat/breakfast pastry is of course Nyan Cat, and the Liopleurodon was most-memorably from “Charlie the Unicorn”). The idea of “Shave and a Haircut” being irresistible for toons comes from Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). Pinkamena’s rant ending in “Mass hysteria!” is derived from Ghostbusters (1984). And talk of villains preparing to kill someone while offering to give them their “Eternal reward” always makes me think of Jafar from Aladdin (1992). The Army of Darkness is just an army of darkness—no relation to the 1992 Evil Dead sequel. Goodnight Moon is a children’s book by Margaret Wise Brown (1947).

Finally, compact discs were developed by the Philips and Sony companies in partnership in 1979.

DAMN IT I JUST READ THE LAST ONE. STOP STEALING MY SLEEP, POODLE.

Edit: whoa did i just beat the author to the first comment on the last chapter? da-yum

Well, this is the part where I step forward to take whatever literary punishment your own inner Critics have to dish out.

Also, raise your hand if you still don't know what the hell's going on with this story. :rainbowhuh:

So they went to see the Dragon Emperor and he trapped them all in a successive onion-like dream, and the only way out is to go through the layers one by one and drag out the pony creating each layer. What a jerkoff. I hate dragons.

See, this is why I just nuke everything I have a disagreement with. Ya can't make a nuke have dreams. And dragons, while lava-proof, are not immune to temperatures which approach those of the core of the Sun.

:pinkiecrazy:

1341546

It's more like they are all in each others' dreams simultaneously.

I hate onions.

Well I do hope there is a sequal but if not it was still a good ending hope you write more bravo

So in the end they were all just dreaming.

This is like mixing the movies 'Inception' with 'Total Recall'. Or to put it more simply,

Total mind fuck from start to finish.dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/emoticons/misc_Twilight_pea.png

And I thought Inception made my head hurt...

1341581

I've got something in mind for at least the first two sequels--now I just have to make myself write them...

So this was all just a dream?

Hehe. A dream. Juuuuust a dream. Hehehe.

I'm gonna go cry.

1341557 I happen to like onions. You are now my arch enemy! *plans giant ray on the moon to zap you*

1341617

Yeah, just a dream...that can kill you.

No biggie.

1341620

No, no, no! You don't put the giant laser on the Moon--you point the giant laser at the Moon!

See?

since chapter 6 I thougt this was dream made by Discord to destroy the frindship of the mane six. Now I have no idea :derpytongue2:

1341624

Actually, I was talking about my mixed feelings of soul-crushing disappointment when you pulled the 'it was all just a dream' card, the sheer magnitude of joy that I learned just what was going on, and the curiousity to see if you continue this idea and where you'll go with it.

Or something. I'unno. I'm gonna go cry some more.

Emotionally conflicted, yay?

I'm trying to decide if I want to see a sequel, or to see you keep this as one of those open endings where what happens next is merely implied. This was an amazing thrillride of a story. I was confused the whole time, and yet when the pieces came together all was crystal clear. You are a gifted writer my friend

1341638 FOOL! I shall create the space laser on my secret moon base, thereby turning the Moon into a 'Death Star'! Then I shall hold the Earth hostage until they pay me 1 beeeeellion onions! MUWAH HA HA HA!!!

:trollestia:

1341546 nor extreme levels of radiation.

I'm... going to say I like this. It was confusing but not really hard to grip and follow, which is what I feel is more important. And now everything makes a rather hilarious amount of sense in every which way, and that means the sequels will make more sense and will deviate from being confusing and mysterious as all hay to being more of a direct adventure kind of deal.

You know, assuming sequels will exist, of course. They don't have to.

Anyhow, I ultimately enjoyed that confusing ride! I hope it was fun enough to write for you :derpytongue2:

1341652

Well I understand how, most of the time, finding out that it's all a dream ruins the story.

That's because by making it a dream, everything the characters suffered through will all be thrown away at the end of the dream, and the world will instantly reset to normal.

It's a little bit different here. Sure, there's the disappointment in discovering that the point of this story really had nothing whatsoever to do with defeating Nightmare Moon. The real point was to discover this was a dream, who the dreamer was, and getting that dreamer to wake up.

In a sense, that turns this whole story into a psychological portrait of Twilight Sparkle, which partially explains why it's so friggin' complicated.

I assure you that Pinkie's dream (assuming I write that story) will be completely different in tone. After all, she'll be narrating it. :pinkiegasp:

1341687

I was actually thinking more along the lines of the Lorax by Dr. Seuss.

I have never read such a confusing story.

*raises hand*

You should make a sequal. That Dragon Emperor is an interesting concept.
I never thought of dragons to constitute a foreign power to challenge Equestria. Dragons are not, in any fiction I have seen a social race. Even in mlp:fim universe dragons pretty much retain their classic characteristics of solitary predators. "The Great Dragon Migration" is an obvious exception that can easily be explained as the dragons mating season.

That's the reason why the only way for dragons to constitute a nation is if you introduce a new element, a mind magic powerful enough to overrule their normal nature, the Dragon Emperor, that most of all works like a zerg overmind.

In the fics I am (trying) to write, the primary foreign power to Equestria is the Holy Griffon Empire, that dominates almost all of a great continent to the east on the other side of the as of yet unnamed ocean. (the official map states that the griffins should be their anyway map

The HGE are actually much more multicultural then Equestria, due to its imperialistic tendencies. Griffons of course make up the majority, but their also lives a bunch of other species like: Minotaurs, Felines, Kitsune and others, I really wont go into detail with.

1341828

That should be interesting. Good luck.

1341638greenenergybc.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/dr_evil_laser.jpg
Well, it just so happens that my "laser" is on the moon, and is pointed directly at washington d.c. Now I will blow it up, unless i recieve, $100 billion.

1341841

Ooo, double quotes! I'm scared.

But I guess I prefer my Moon to be "laser" free, so I I'll pay up.

All I have on me is $15,140, in this Deluxe, Special Edition American currency:

brokensecrets.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/money-deck.jpg?w=455
That will work, right? :rainbowlaugh:

1341840

Oh and it should be mentioned that most of these species are omnivore, and the felines for example are strictly carnivore. They live in the tropical jungles in the southernmost potion of the HGE where they have more or less been incorporated into a semi self autonomous province.

Of course there are also small tribes in the jungles south of Equestria and Zembrango. As you know Equestria officially stops at the northernmost part of the great desert to the west and the Badlands to the east, south of that is a savannah that constitute Zembrango (the homeland of the zebras) south of that again is the tropical rainforests where the felines lives.
Some of them are hunters, but the more civilized felines that lives near the coast have become farmers that lives on domesticated animals like pigs and cows (their cows can't talk).
Now imagine what would happen if some of them meet the ponies of Equestria (remember how they reached to Zecora a fellow herbivore).

Oh and it should be mentioned that it is very dangerous to cross the great desert as it is home to monstrous predators like "Sand Sharks" and "Effing Worms"
(and the air in the badland is poisonous to everything but a changeling, oh and their is changelings there, lots of them)

okay. Did not expect it to end like this. Should have though ... explains the narrator "mishaps" in the beginning.

... kinda feel like I have to reread the story under the aspect of it begin twilights dream - may I ask for a few, perhaps, spoiler though? How much of the dream was purely twilights making and how much was set by the dragon emporer? If the dragon emporer had manipulated her - is she free of that manipulation now? If so, why? (Assuming it was done via suggestions and mind control, I don't see why breaking the dream would also break those?)

1341802

I take it you haven't read http://www.fimfiction.net/story/836/Double-Rainbow ... being based on time travel, alternative universes and a narration that is not in chronological order easily turn that one into one hell of a confusing thingy, orders of magnitude more confusing than this story.

... oh and looking forward to the sequels, pinkies dream is going to be fun (read: mindshattering insane) ^^

1341516 *Puts his hand up* Make another one? THIS ONE IS AWESOME!
:rainbowkiss:

1341828 >>>The HGE are actually much more multicultural then Equestria, due to its imperialistic tendencies. Griffons of course make up the majority, but their also lives a bunch of other species like: Minotaurs, Felines, Kitsune and others, I really wont go into detail with.>>>

And of course they all want to eat ponies...

:trollestia:

What motivation could you need besides readers asking for more, and the ideas for sequels running around in your head? I want to see how this dream trap unravels and all the world-building back-story you sneak into each episode.

Pinkamena "Pinkie Diane Responsibility" Pie is going to have some really interesting stuff, eh?

I'm imagining as inspiration the trope "Crapsacchrine World" (Don't go on TVtropes unless you've got hours on hand, alert disclaimer). Pinkamena's personality is too strongly fanon to alter overmuch, and Pinkie's is canon the same way. Either that, or the world is completely schizophrenic. Luckily, the adventurers have the ultimate currency: The ability to make dream-enhanced pinkie promises.

1342009

Well not anymore. Griffins are omnivore and can eat practically anything (anything organic).
You are confusing the old griffon empire with the new Holy Griffon Empire. You see all Griffins are mortals, so due to the lack of immortal godlike rulers like Celestia, they have to make up their own gods. Their religion is based on the teaching of the preacher "Grisus" who preached love and tolerance between all species and a prohibition from eating and a prohibition from eating other intelligent species.

Of course to help spread the good word, they needed force of arms and a strong temporal power to act as the sword and the claw of the spiritual one. That became the start of the great Griffon crusades. It is their holy mission to introduce griffon law to all races (and make all races subject to the holy emperor).
The whole thing with Equestria (and Celestia controlling the sun) is something they tend to avoid) Ignore it and it will go away. There have never been a war between Equestria and the HRE. their were some with the old warlords in the ancient past. Their complete annihilation by a younger and much more violent Celestia and Luna was part of the reason why the griffins have developed kind of a phobia against setting a paw on Equestrian soil.

1341997

As I implied in the flashback in Chapter 3, the Dragon Emperor tried and failed to use his power on the Mane Six. They and the Princesses alone are definitely immune to his power. Even asleep, his control over them is far from absolute, as evidenced by the fact that none of the other ponies tried to attack Vinyl when it became obvious that she was trying to wake up Twilight. I also think it's a reasonable guess that Vinyl has now proved herself immune as well, or she never would have been able to break free.

So how much control does the Emperor have over them? The exact nature of the dreams in this dream trap spell is somewhat up in the air. It is perhaps a little...convenient...though that both Vinyl and Twilight forgot the details of Twilight's dream almost as soon as they left it, so they wouldn't question it too much.

What I can say is this: the basic subject of the dream ("What would have happened if the Elements of Harmony were too powerful?") did come from Twilight, and in the normal course of affairs she would have been the main character in it (as most people do tend to star in their own dreams). The Emperor's effect on her dream was to shove Twilight out of that starring role, and stick the intruder (Vinyl) in her place.

Now anybody who remembers some of their weirder dreams knows that the unconscious mind can do an amazing job of fitting whatever is happening in the waking world into the dream world. So in this case, "Dreamer" Twilight adjusted her dream around the fact that Vinyl was now the star--that meant coming up with an entire system of musical magic on the fly. This also meant that Dreamer Twilight had to find a place for "Dream" Twilight, the part of her that was acting in this dream (and of course was unaware of the fact that she was dreaming). Dreamer Twilight wound up inventing what Vinyl Scratch's role might normally have been in the dream (a musical version of Zecora, if Zecora had had a role in the Return of Nightmare Moon), and then customizing the part for herself.

That's about all that we can tell for sure. Whether or not there was a little Dragon Emperor voice in Dreamer Twilight's head suggesting she make this dream as deadly as possible will just have to be tested based on the evidence of the dreams that follow. But with Vinyl and Twilight now "lucid", they should hopefully be completely free of the Emperor's influence, assuming he doesn't get clever and plant a "get back into the dream" plot device into one of the dreams to come...

Another question is whether the Emperor controlled any of the "non-player characters" in the dream, particularly Nightmare Moon. Remember that Twilight's mind is controlling this dream, so even if the Emperor wished to manipulate things, he would be required to stick with what Twilight would accept, or else he stands a chance of shocking her into waking up. That Nightmare Moon would go on a homicidal rage based on the actions of the independent actor Spike would be reasonable to Twilight. After all, she's running this as a war simulation, so she went in expecting casualties. So you therefore have to ask yourself, is there any difference between a Twilight-run homicidal Nightmare Moon, and a Dragon Emperor-run homicidal Nightmare Moon?

One last question yet to be answered one way or the other is about the other Element Bearers. In this particular dream, only Dream Spike (a figment of Dreamer Twilight), Vinyl Scratch and, briefly, Dream Twilight herself, were able to break through to self-awareness. Applejack looked like she might be getting close, but we didn't get enough time to see for sure. If any other ponies do manage to break through, that would save the trouble of having to travel through her dream to wake her up.

Side note: Yeah, try to wrap your mind around that: the character of Spike, who Dreamer Twilight invented for this dream, reached self-awareness, to the point of being aware that he was an imaginary character! For Equestria, that's roughly on the order of Johnny Five's "I am alive!" moment.

Based on all this, what will happen in Pinkie's dream? Will Vinyl find herself with the power to break the Fourth Wall using the power of wubs? Only time will tell! dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/Vinyl_Scratch_lolface.png

1342087

thanks for the enlightening response.

Whether or not there was a little Dragon Emperor voice in Dreamer Twilight's head suggesting she make this dream as deadly as possible will just have to be tested based on the evidence of the dreams that follow.

my bits are on "yes". Especially given the end of chapter 13 ("My signature...could it be? No, no, I have to take command of this situation! I cannot allow the scenario to be aborted before Nightmare Moon achieves her final victory and I have a chance to tally the death toll! Focus...focus...")

hm ... what with the basic scenario being provided by the pony who's the dreamer and the assumption that it's supposed to be negative - Pinkie's dream might be set around them not liking her parties ... and pinkamena ... ooor I guess something along the lines of Cupcakes oO
... and uhm, if vinyl is replacing pinkies spot in that dream, she'd get a hold of pinkie's sense ... which are apparently quite disturbing. Oh and a potential storybreaker, if she can break the fourth wall enough - since that might allow her to realize quicker that what is going on.
So many possibilities oO -Must- read when it's out xD

1341692 Never read it, or seen the movie... :applejackconfused:

This suddenly makes sense. I'm not sure how that's possible, but this makes sense.

1341638
I think this is relevant here.

1341688

Alright then. I'm gonna trust you on this. Don't make me play the fool.

Or the fiddle. Any string instrument, really. The piano's out, too. Percussion's beyond my expertise. Actually, all I can play is the trombone, and horribly at that.

1341516
I am still slightly confused, especially with the shifting of who was narrating at the end (previous chapter).

1341516

*raises hand*

If you wake up and I am part of your dream, what happens to the person who is dreaming of you in my dream?

My Little Pony: Metaphysics is Awesome!

Wait... they are still dreaming and they are still in the castle by the sea. Why didn't the dragon emperor just leave a single mook there to slit their throats before they wake up? Surely with his mind control he could leave that mook there while preventing it from getting any superpowers of its own from the castle.

Damn it man you cost me 3 hours with that tv tropes link! I ended up stuck on the lamest edit wars page and just couldn't get out!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Lamest_edit_wars

If Twilight and Vinyl do make it into Pinkie's psyche, this is what I predict:

A: everyone has pinkie pie powers, such as doozies, teleporting, 4th wall.

B: everyone except Twilight and Vinyl have pinkie pie powers.

C: Twilight and Vinyl get to meet Pinkie herself (not a dream character) because she's able to delve i to her own mind.

D: everyone is Pinkie Pie except Twilight and Vinyl

E: Pinkie Pie rubs off onto Twilight and Vinyl, leaving them with Pinkie Pie attributes for the next dream they visit/escape out of the dream.

I think E would be the most interesting to read and write about.

Did Spike ever find out just how awesome he was in the dream?
He did not even have to use dream Swag Powers! :moustache:

Whoo! Let's see Pinkie's dreamscape next!!! :pinkiehappy:

DAMN, man, how'd you finish this already?

1341596 Please do

1342963

D: everyone is Pinkie Pie

There's a fic like that. Forget what it's called, tho

1341818 I did that once. Somebody bet me $1 I wouldn't survive and I was like, "IT IS ON!!"

But the train that hit me derailed and killed 346 commuters.

I felt really bad about that. So I donated the dollar I won to charity.

Now I feel better! :pinkiecrazy::pinkiecrazy:

1341516

You did not finish the story. You finished part of it, and there are far to many loose ends that need to be resolved.

Please tell us the rest of the story.
