Recommended Groups/Resources

The Proofreader Group -- As long as you read the rules and are willing to vet people before asking them, this group is a fantastic resource for writers of all types.

The Big Master Review List -- A list of all reviewed stories with links to those reviews. It is maintained by Singularity Dream. Obviously such a list can never be truly complete, but SD does a fantastic job maintaining it. This is a great resource, whether you are an author, reviewer, or reader.

Writers and Reviewers Institute for Technical Excellence -- I've had excellent experiences with reviewers from this group; they are thorough and don't pull any punches. Sadly, they appear to be inactive at this time

Taking Review Requests [OPEN] · 11:36am Jan 23rd, 2016

If [OPEN], I am accepting new requests. If [CLOSED], I am working on current requests (check back later )

If you follow me, then you are likely aware of my ongoing review series. In order to mix things up a little, I am now taking requests for stories to review. Like everything in life, there are some caveats:
*Only request reviews for one of your own stories.
*Only request one review at a time.
*No stories longer than ~25k words please.
*Only request reviews of stories that are complete.
**I generally only do prereading/editing/pre-publish commentary for people I already know somewhat and/or for stories that catch my attention. You are welcome to ask, but don't be surprised if it's a "no".
*Any stories with the Random tag, Crossovers, 2nd Person, or Human in Equestria are extremely hard sells for me.

The Best of my Stories

  • Blitzkrieg Poison Kills Assassins The ultimate action stallion ninja hero is back. In this critically acknowledged sequel, everypony's favorite demolitions expert must confront his old mentor. …And this time…it's poisonal… by cleverpun 2,921 words · 1,345 views · 102 likes · 8 dislikes

  • If You Came to Conquer Nightmare Moon won. She defeated Celestia, broke the Elements, banished the sun. This all happened a very long time ago. So long ago, that she has had plenty of time to change her mind. Not that fixing it will be simple. by cleverpun 5,959 words · 15,277 views · 1,557 likes · 21 dislikes
  • “Princest Is Wincest,” It Said Luna reread the graffiti, but it came no closer to making sense. “Princest Is Wincest,” it said. The Worst of my Stories

Improvement is inevitable, and that means that not everything one writes is going to be good. This is a list of stories I wrote which are bad. Please start with stories besides the ones in this list. I could un-publish them, but even terrible writing has value sometimes. I could do better now, but they are important reminders of how far I've come.

“It's hell writing and it's hell not writing. The only tolerable state is having just written.”
― Robert Hass

Reminder: Story Collab now has a Group, First Deadline Approaching! · 1:54am April 23rd

The collaborative project I proposed in my previous blog has started to gain some traction. It now has its own group, which is the main spot for discussing the direction of the story and everyone's chapters.

Since membership appears to have peaked, I'm now calling on everyone to present their concepts for their chapters. Anyone who intends to actually participate, please post in the appropriate thread what you think your chapter is going to be about. This initial concept can be as rough or as refined as you please: after all, the point of a group story is that we can discuss it together!

Dude... that trilogy was deep.

2332777 The problem with Mayael is that she turns you into a big target. That's the reason I gave up on building Kaalia: she just draws too much attention to herself. But I guess I still run Jhoira, so maybe that's not the best excuse :derpytongue2:

Sanguine+Exquisite is already going in there. The whole reason why I wanted to build it was because I realized how many ways there are to abuse Serra Avatar. I'm waffling between Ayli and Mayael, though. Mayael has stuff like Predator's Rapport and Dazzling Reflection to take advantage of the fact that the Avatar's P/T is equal to your life total.

2332764 To me, Atraxa seemed the most fun. The themes of the other decks didn't really appeal to me. She's also looking like a popular target for superfriends (free loyalty every turn), but I don't have anywhere near the budget for that.

The power level of my group is pretty high, so I'm used to lots of shenanigans anyway (Augustin stax, Narset infinites, Progenitus superfriends, the list goes on).

My version of Karlov is more midrange/gradual poke. It's mostly an excuse to play my favorite color combination, though, it started as a pre-con and didn't necessarily develop a major game plan. If you're going for lifegain-as-weapon, don't forget sanguine bond :raritywink:

cleverpun's 2016 reading journal · 11:04pm Feb 4th, 2016

A common piece of writing advice is that to become a better writer, one should read a lot. There is truth to this, of course, depending on what one reads.

Last year, because of school, I didn't read very much. My spare time was often taken up by assignments. One thing I noticed, however, was that taking a book to work and reading it during my mandatory breaks actually let me get through a lot of material. Add in the regular access to a library (since I work at a college and they thus give me an employee library card), and I think I read more (non-fan)fiction in the last four months of 2015 than I had in a very long time. I read several collections of science fiction short stories from the 60/70s, in particular.
