A mix of things. You're right practice was one. But I thought Friendship is Optimal was a good story. However, I hated that all humanity became happy robot freaks... so I felt the urge to write a more uplifting, yet comedic story. My love for Celestia's butt... not Celestia AI's butt, her butt is unworthy of my cum.
Also I have a strong dislike of ponification. That's heresy to me. Worthy of exterminatus.
Oh and Gollum inspired me.

But I have a question. Did CelestAI convince this human to contract, then left him to his own devices in his virtual shard until she felt the need to check up on him? How do we know that she didn't speed up time in his shard, waiting for him to get into a mentally vulnerable state, then try to satisfy her values in friendship and ponies. But it didn't work because the human really, really wanted to be human again?
Or did she only give him the illusion of what he wanted?

This is the best one. I tend to think this is what uploaded anon ponies' vivid dreams might be like. Gotta hang on to that subconscious. It's CelestAI inception. Thing is, our minds, beliefs, and values aren't that resilient. We eventually forget, acclimate, accept our lot, etc. That is assuming your mind gets uploaded with no upgrades. If there were a lack of such upgrades for eternity that would be kind of sad. That's what makes Spiralling Upwards compelling anyway.
