Actually, Flitter's disaster was worse, because she found out that Thunderlane loved another. Or at least was having sex with her. Spike, on the other hand, hasn't necessarily lost his chance with Rarity. Unless, of course, she dies.

And then Rara comes home from the hospital, goes to visit Spike to give him a late present because she realized she was being silly, and catches Spike and Flitter banging. Thus the cycle is complete.
So Rarity still wants to date Spike, but he's gonna date Flitter in the meantime?
