Scootaloo’s twelfth birthday is on the horizon, and her friends are planning to throw her the biggest birthday bash in all of Ponyville History. Meanwhile Scootaloo hasn’t been feeling well, and has been feeling like no pony truly loves her. What with less time being spent with her friends and her adopted older sister Rainbow Dash, the little filly is feeling very much alone. In a world where everyone has loved ones and commitments but you, it’s not hard too feel like you have nothing.

But when she starts to see a hooded figure plaguing her with nightmares, visions and ponies that feel so familiar, she will find that there is a lot more to her than meets the eye.

This story is a sequel to What I've Become

It is highly recommended that you read What I've Become before you read this story, since this is the second story in The Humanity Within Trilogy, and you will be lost if you just plunge into this without any preparation.

All Private Shadow Heart wanted was to protect others, so she joined the Solar Guard in an effort to fulfill that dream. However, it seems as if her dreams are crushed when her first assignment is to babysit some self-important, arrogant Night Tribe noble.

However, events quickly disabuse her of that notion as she is thrust into a world of political intrigue, espionage, and piracy.

Oh, and to top it all off, the princesses themselves have charged her with taking down an international sapient trafficking ring.

It must be a Monday...

The Dark tag is there for some more mature themes and a grittier depiction of the evil being confronted by our heroes. (namely the pirates and the slavery ring.) I don't subscribe to describing gruesome scenes of death and destruction, but the fact that there is a slavery ring automatically earns this story the dark tag in my book.

Also, the alternate universe tag is there because this is a far more seedier and troubled Equestria. All characters and events from the show still happened and are depicted as such, but there is also a distinct presence of pirates, griffin warbands and slavers, which have never appeared in the show.

The setting is just after the Canterlot wedding episode, but before Discord is set free again.

When Sombra, ex-ruler of the Crystal Empire, is discovered alive and well, Twilight has her hooves full keeping the tyrannical king in check. Instead of the original plan of throwing him in a dungeon or banishing him to Tartarus, Celestia decides to go with the plan that worked out well enough for Discord.

Princess Celestia hosted Equestria's 1000th Royal Gala, welcoming all kinds of species, Griffons, Dragons, all kinds. During this she met many interesting people, ponies, and other species, but lacked a date, a stallion to be with, and was looked down upon by the royals. A princess without a date? This was unusual.

... until she met him. One of few humans in existence, she fell in love with him quickly and asked him to stay in Equestria, rather than returning home beyond the Great Unknown. He didn't need her. He didn't need anyone, for that matter. It was only when she was ready to give her life to him did he realize that he wanted her.

He would come to need her, just as she needed him... and on the night of their year anniversary of being together, he was wrongly taken, his love and memories destroyed and was sent back to the human world without any hardships, so as he would have no want to stay in Equestria, even if he did return, somehow.

But how long can he keep himself apart from his memories of her? And why does her sister act the way she does?
