Luna has been anticipating Nightmare Night since she heard that it had been created while she was gone. After making a trip to Ponyville, the place from which she had been freed, she finds herself rejected by everypony. Well, everypony but Rainbow Dash, that is...

The world is a much different place than it was a thousand years ago. Pegasi played a huge role in the world and way of life around the country, as well as formed of the most popular past times. Unicorns were still as noble and deceiving as ever depending on their up bringing, but the amount of scholars in there midst have dwindled alarmingly. And Earth Ponies....they were no longer dirt on the hooves of those higher than them. They were nobles, busniess ponies, preformers, or critically acclaimed engineers that helped run today's transportation.

Being intrested in the Earth Pony's rise from poverty and into an equal light, Luna removes herself from duty temporarly and places herself in the care the one of the most trustworthy earth ponies she knows for the length of a year to help her learn the ways of the earth pony to help better understand them. Poor Applejack isn't quite sure what she is getting herself into when she agrees...

Before her descent into madness and her rebellion as Nightmare Moon, Luna lived entire lifetimes as a mortal and traveller amongst the ponies of Equestria.

Restored to her true self, Luna knows she must return to her cyclic life to remain whole. As preparation she chooses to reacquaint herself with the lives of her subjects in this modern age, and in the guise of Sable Moonshine, unicorn scholar and distant friend of Twilight Sparkle, she travels to Ponyville to spend time with Twilight's companions. Despite the 'exciting' month of astronomical observation and scientific research planned by Twilight, Luna nevertheless finds time to work a day at Sweet Apple Acres. And then another.

And another.

Applejack, meanwhile, is pleasantly surprised by Sable's dedication and enthusiasm for hard work. She's less pleasantly surprised by Sable's enthusiasm for Applejack.

The moon rose through the forest brightening up clouds in front of it. Luna swooped in front of it. And suddenly the earth shook.

After consulting her sister Celestia about this she realizes what she has to do. Together with her first and best friend Twilight Sparkle she now embarks on a quest. A quest to cleanse Equestria from these last remnants of a nightmare.
