Flash Sentry of the Equestrian Royal Guard has been called many things. Not among those are: intelligent; handsome; destined for better things; good with the ladies. But this year, he thinks that he's found just the right Hearthswarming gift to change all of that. Unfortunately, he's short on time.

More unfortunately, his gift may not be so perfect after all. There are others out there willing to do horrid things to take it for themselves. And Flash's new “allies” may not be trustworthy. It's starting to seem like failing as a gift-giver might be the best fate Flash can hope for.

The Rainbooms are one of the few bands at CHS that didn't dissolve after the fad passed with the Battle of the Bands. Of course, they aren't the only one. Flash Drive never stopped being a thing, which means Applejack and Rainbow Dash can borrow their guitarist to settle a bet. Should be simple, right?

To be fair, it was still early in the girls' career as magical guardians. They had yet to learn that nothing is ever truly simple.

On top of that, his erstwhile mentor Star Swirl the Bearded has saddled him with a mysterious magical necklace and a uniquely bleak and pointless prophecy: If he's brave enough, and if he's clever enough, he just might survive Celestia for long enough to break her heart.
