In the wake of Twilight’s escape from her kingdom, Nightmare Moon sentences Rarity, her palace steward, to a terrible fate: bound in gold and priceless gems, she’s to be thrown into an ancient dragon prison to be messily devoured.

Except the prison isn’t what it seems, nor is its sole occupant. Rarity just might find her life instead of losing it, and alter the course of Equestrian history in process.

A number of years have passed and Spike has grown up to a young adult dragon. He has finally found a romantic partner in the earth pony Rising Up, but some shadows loom on the horizon.

Primarily focused on the relationships between Spike and the Mane 6. Depiction of the individuals is somewhat anthrophied.

Warnings: this fic contains copious amounts of pony-dragon speciesism, fridge logic, mature themes, swearwords and depictions of sexual acts in later chapters. Do not consume if allergic to any of the above-mentioned ingredients, or if consumption is illegal where you live.

Shaping a loose collective of dragons into a formidable and regimented empire isn't the easiest task. But with the proper application of wit and willpower, she's started to chisel out edges in the previously dull kingdom, started to sculpt it into something powerful enough to stand the test of time.

Spike was only supposed to visit her as a diplomat, to help her hammer out a trade agreement between The New Dragon Empire and Equestria. But he's everything a dragon shouldn't be: conciliatory, spineless, peace-loving, friendly. He sees what she has to do - executions, browbeating, delegation - and balks, has the audacity to think he can help her.

And he's getting popular. Among them. They're supposed to hate him, but they're doing the opposite. And in a world where he's treated like royalty and could have been king, what room is there left for Ember? How's she supposed to govern when the mere presence of a foreigner is enough to shake the empire's principles to their roots?

This story is designed to be able to be read as a stand-alone long story. Similarly, Flint. is designed to be read as a stand-alone short story. For fullest reading experience, however, read the two of them together; chronologically, the events of Steel. come literally right after the events of Flint.

I'm gonna be honest, I haven't done multi-chapter stuff in a while, and I might have bitten off more than I can chew here. I've got it all plotted out, in my head and on paper, but actually making good on my promises feels daunting at best. "Bear with me" applies until I've published everything, I guess, and I'll try to release chapters on a semi-regular basis until it's done (and add a tag when it starts actually cropping up in the story proper.)

Over the months they've been together, Rarity and Fluttershy have only grown closer in their burgeoning relationship. But whatever the happiness they've found with each other, in their growth, there's somepony they've left behind. Somedragon they've left behind.

The years have been kind to Rarity. A wonderful husband and great friends have softened the reality of time passing. Now in her old age she carries the weight of her limited time, but a chance encounter with an old foe may give her life a new unexpected direction.

"Every normal pony must be tempted, at times, to spit on her hooves, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.”

Over brunch, Twilight Sparkle lines out her plans to turn to a life of villainy. For the most part, her friends are all for it.

It makes sense in context, honest.

"That design, those accents, that functionality! Why, if you told me this was simply a costume, I would have never known!"

Before their departure back to Ponyville, Rarity spies Spike longingly admiring a strange event being set up at the very hotel they stayed at. Instantly getting stars in his eyes, he tells her that this is the same venue for the largest comicbook convention in Equestria, the Manehatten Comic-Con. Although she initially feels indifferent towards a bunch of ponies dressing up as their favorite heroes and villains from their comics, she can't help but take notice of the level of craftsmanship and love that goes into their costumes...as well as the intriguing subculture behind it all.

With a new pair of wings and on the cusp of a big break, things are looking up for Spike the dragon as he comes of age. The future's also looking bright for Rarity the unicorn as she continues to expand her business. However, dangerous enemies from the past and present threaten to destroy the idyllic life of Spike, Rarity, and their friends. Caught up in harrowing intrigues in Equestria and beyond, bonds are tested. Can love and friendship really overcome all obstacles?
