Long ago, the Crystal Empire, led by Sombra, and the changelings clashed. The Empire won, throwing the changelings into disarray, destroying their home and taking their Heart, the source of their love. Now the changelings learn that the Legacy of Hatred is more than a myth, and that Sombra is returning. He remembers a confidence shared, a betrayal done, and a vengeance wrought against him.

The changeling that betrayed him is long gone, but her descendant remains.

Chrysalis rules a fractured people, and she sees only one chance to save them.

It's been a month since Twilight Sparkle, human student, made friends with six strangers and saved Canterlot High from the Sirens. Only, with the danger gone and a semblance of normality restored, she wonders what it is about these girls, so disparate in nature, that makes them such good friends, and what her role is as their friend.

It's not helping that another Twilight Sparkle reunited them first, almost half a year ago, but her friends are determined to show her that she belongs, and that they like her.

Apple is a funny word, one that Winona doesn't quite understand.

Her family uses it to refer to food, to trees, to themselves and to each other. It's all very inconsistent.

But whether she understands it or not, she'll always be there for the pony she knows as Little Apple.

Due to an editing/publishing error, all of Twilight's friends have now 'officially' died of old age. This leaves an immortal Twilight to grieve over the tragedy of how she outlived all of her friends and will continue to do so for the rest of her eternal life.

Seeing the obvious pain that this news is having on Twilight, Princess Celestia moves to console her with the help of her supposedly-but-actually-not-really-deceased friends.
