Octavia Philharmonica is a desperate mare. Faced with the possibility of being evicted from her apartment for inability to pay rent she decides to take a temporary job at a local nightclub. Every pony in Equestria knows the names Octavia Philharmonica and Vinyl Scratch. Every musician in Equestria knows and reveres their talent and most semi-jokingly complain that Octavia and Vinyl's relationship should count as a monopoly on musical talent. Very few know their early story, years ago when Octavia had only just left Canterlot Conservatory and Vinyl was... well, being Vinyl.

Octavia and Vinyl couldn't be more different. Sure, they both like jazz(-ish), but that's about all they have in common. After one really bad first impression, can these two stand to be around each other long enough to recognize that they're not that different? And that they're both looking for the same thing?

In an attempt to help her school's losing soccer team finally bond, team manager Twilight Sparkle takes the whole team to a ranch over spring break. Already uncomfortable being around her otherwise entirely male team, Rainbow Dash is dragged along reluctantly for the ride. However, finding herself in sunny, open fields, Rainbow realizes she is quickly falling for one of the farm hands, a freckle-faced blonde teeming with southern charm. AppleDash, human. Vinyl Scratch wants to put the past behind her as she starts her new life at Equestria United Community College. But can she overcome that past to get along with her new classically inclined roommate Octavia and learn new ways to enjoy and express music with the Equestrian Girls, the local A Cappella group of EUCC?

Yes, I know, it sounds an awful lot like some other american movie *cough cough* Pitch Perfect *cough cough*, but I couldn't help it! I watched the movie, all I thought of was that Beca was their DJ, and we had our own. So while I did get a lot of inspiration from the movie, this will have a few of it's own twists and turns.

Two side-notes to make: One, thanks to Gwg for the editing and some suggestions for this story! Two, this story takes place in the same universe as the rest of my stories, but happens 4 years before Twilight first comes to Ponyville. ENJOY!

This is not your typical love story. This is not a story where upon realizing my feelings for Rainbow Dash, I confess my love to her and she confesses back and we live happily ever after. This is a story about my infatuation with my best friend, and my constant fear of letting that secret out. Love isn't always an easy path to take, and it sure as hell ain't no sunshine and fairy tales.
